spark plug
you mean something like this??

Sorry for them being blurry...kinda hard to take upclose shots...but you get the idea. Pulled that puppy out of cylinder 3 - - luckily it was the only one that was bad....and do not ask me how the damn thing still managed to fire.
Anyways, to answer your questions... my Haynes manual says "Ash Deposits: Light brown deposits encrusted on the side or center electrodes or both.. Derived from oil and/or fuel additives. Excessive amounts may mask the spark, casuing misfiring and hesitation during acceleration. If excessife deposits accumulate over a short time or low mileage, install new valve guide seals to prevent seepage of oil into the combustion chambers. Also try changing gasoline brands."
And as for proper gap, not sure if they're the same on 305's as they are on 350's, but stock gap for a 350 is .035....if you're running a better ignition system, gap them a little higher (.040-.050). You should also be able to check the sticker under the hood to find out for sure.
Good luck.
