Replace AFPR or look for other problem?

Relatively easy problem, but could be a PITA...

W/ the vacuum hose disconnected from my AFPR, the gauge only reads 40 PSI...with my current setup i should be running around 47 or so... so my question is where should i start?

I figured I'd replace the filter and AFPR first...as i dont wanna mess w/ the pump just yet. Sound like a good plan or should I look elsewhere for this problem?

Also, which AFPR does everyone recommend?? I was thinking of going w/ Holley, just because they've been around for a while w/ quality parts...any other suggestions??

Thanks

Well i've decided to go ahead and replace the AFPR, and have decided on Holley...now my only question is this...
summit lists two different AFPRs - one for 5.0's ($80) and one for 5.7's ($130). I remember reading a post a while back and someone said that Summit has their head up their ***, and just to get the $80 one...

I checked the part numbers on Holley's site, and the $130 AFPR is shown as being for 93+ LT1/LT4's, while the $80 AFPR is for 85-92 5.0's. Can somebody clarify this for me?? Btw, I have a 5.7l motor

Before you go that far, you might want to check the rail pressure with the fuel return line pinched to make sure the pump can produce adequate pressure. If the pump is failing or the filter is clogging, you can bolt on regulators all day with no improvement.

I just hate to see you replacing parts unnecessarily without some solid diagnosis.

good thinkin...now my next question..
i'm not too familiar w/ the fuel system at all, so where would be the best place to close off the return line to see if the pump will put out a higher pressure...if u have pics or diagrams that'd be great, thx again

You can pinch off the return line in the loop of hose on the left side of the engine. Use either the special rounded jaw Vise Grips (made for the purpose) or two pieces of soft wood and a 'C' clamp. If the return line is closed and the system still will not develop higher pressure, the pump or filter is suspect. If the pressure suddenly increases with the pinched line, the regulator may be failing.
