Oil Question

I bought my 92 RS TBI from another kid and it didn't have the original manual with it. How many quarts should I use in the engine? Last oil change I did, i put in an AC Delco filter, 5 quarts of 5w30 castrol full syntec and the 8 cyl bottle of the STOP Restorer junk. A guy that lives in my neighboorhood trains other engineers for Cummins Diesel engines. He says if I use a 20w50 oil I'll be able to keep the car for a long time and since I live in such a hot *** climate I should stop using the 5w30.

Did I use too much oil on my last change since I added the stop stuff too?

Is the stop restorer stuff total crap, especially since I use a fully synthetic oil?

Would it make the 20w50 too thick if I added the stop on the next oil change?

Thanks a ton.

I dont know what that guy was thinking, but stay with 5W30 or 10W30. And the way you can tell if you have put to much in there is to check the dipstick, if it is way over, then yeah, thats a bad thing. But who here has ever done that????

5 qts should do it with the filter change, assuming it has the stock oil pan.
What does the dipstick say?

I wouldn't add any additives to my engine oil.
From what I've seen of them, they cause more problems than they solve.

Replacing the oil and filter regularly is MUCH more important than what kind of oil you use or what you add to it.

I've been running 10-30 or 10-40 in Texas for over 20 years and never had a oil related failure.

yeah use the dip stick, but 5 quarts ought to be fine. i wouldn't use any magic fix-alls in a bottle either. if i lived in fla. i'd be running 20w50 synthetic, actually mobil 1 or amsoil, in the heat. in coller weather i might drop back to 10w-40 or 5w-30. i wouldn't use castorl, pennzoil, or valvoline synthetic, they don't come out real well when tested. do a search here and you ought to find the link to the testing ,sorry i don't have it.

So next time I'll use 5 quarts of mobil 1 full synthetic 20w-50. The dipstick is over by quite a bit but I've had this change in there for about 1600 miles now, no problems. Oil pressure is high though. And whats the deal about everyone complaining about fram oil filters? I've never used one but do they cause big problems with our cars?

again i don't have the link, but if you do a search you ought to find a thread with it in it. fram didn't come out real well in testing of filters. most people here prefer AC, i use AC or WIX. wal mart use to sell ACs but dropped them. sure was easy to pick up a filter or two when i was in wa lmart, now i have to make a point of buying a filter when i'm in auto zone, not often, hate their stuff.
