i just drove home ........about halfway home the tube on the back of my mechanical oil pressure gauge popped off(dont know how....its been on for years and still loooks new.......well needless to say molten hot oil began to spray out the tube.....by the time i could grab it a good amount poured onto my cd player and passenger seat.....(luckily my cd case was closed and on the seat so it took most of the abuse instead of my seat........
in the middle of traffic and quick stupid thinking i put my thumb over the tube to stop the flow......big mistake.....that oil was ****ing hot...... but i refused to let go until i pulled over and shut off engine......soas to not have an oil bath
final results.
lost about a quart of oil(no biggie i had a quart in back of car)
cd player covered in oil
cd case ruined
burnt finger(pretty bad too hurts like hell)
center consol covered in oil
ruined shorts......got some on em...wont come out
just had to vent.....off to clean the car now.....ahhhhhhh
btw the gauge was mounted under the center vents......had been there for about two years with no trouble.....still not sure how that compression fitting worked its way loose.........
thanks for lettin me bitch....

i was considering putting a mechanical one in but the thought of having that happen to me is what detered me from doing it. I know this doesnt help you but imho the best place for gauges of that sort are on the outside of the car on the cowl area. Best of luck getting it all sorted out, though.

well i got it cleaned up.....it wasnt too bad since my finger took 80 percent of the abuse.....nice old blister forming too......oh well another lesson learned......
bet the line was plastic wasn't it? i've trashed about a mile of the plastic, i always go to the hardwear store and buy copper. i'd bet if i tried i could put a NPT or AN adapter fitting on it and run braided stainless.

Oh frig; I've had a plastic line on my mechanical pressure gauge since '97. I better replace it, eh? Would I use the same compression fittings that came with the plastic hookup kit? Or do I need stronger fittings?

In over 30 years, I've never had a plastic line fail. Seep a little, yes, but never fail.
Last spring, when running the '57 through tech at Bandimere, I had a new oil pressure gage, and, you guessed it, a new, bright white plastic line. They made me change it to copper (NHRA requirement). Had it been the old, dirty, oil-stained plastic line, they probably wouldn't have seen it or said anything (like they hadn't since 1995). The copper tubing oil pressure kit cost me $18 at the track parts store.
Tom, plastic and copper use the same fittings.

Sorry to hear of your accident.
And now we know why we don't put fuel pressure gages in our cars without an isolator. Though I have seen two 4th gen owners with just that set up!

Autometer, and most of the braided hose makers, make an adapter from the gauge(i believe most are 1/8 or 1/4 pipe) to either #3 or #4 stainless. And the pressure tap in the block is also 1/8 pipe. I wont use anything but stainless hose for the same reason. That, or use the autometer electric gauge. Sorry to hear about your mess dude, that sucks.
