They're pretty much the same engine, except I would take the 86 305 because it has flat top pistons. The 82 will have dished ones, lower the compression ratio.

82= 2 piece rear main

86= 1 piece rear main,

i second the movement for the 86 due to compression, and the fact that if you ever decide to put a 6 spd from a 4th gen in flywheels are much easier to come by and lots cheaper

wouldn't the 86 also be a roller cam????,

Excellent point about the seals. I missed that one. The 1 piece rear seal is less prone to leaks also, but you will have to get a different flexplate/flywheel for it, but it is very easy to obtain.

Actually 87 was the first year of the roller camshaft.

I thought the 86s still had two piece rear seals

Choose the 86--it has about 20 more hp

The tranny is the same for both. You will just need a different flexplate (auto) or flywheel (manual) so it will bolt up. You could get one from any junkyard.

Sitting Bull, 86 was the first year of the 1 piece rear seal.

Torque converters are different for the two. 27 spline '82 30 spline '86. Parts are cheaper for two piece seal engines. Did they start that center bolt valve cover stuff in '86 too? Probably doesn't matter seeing how he should throw away everything but the block anyway.

No 87 was the first year of the centerbolt heads on SBC's.

Why should he throw away the heads? If he's on a budget, the 416 castings can be made into excellent heads.

That's why I was looking at it from a cost stand point. If he does the machining himself, then you're right it's going to be cheaper to keep them. There are plenty of aftermarket and stock replacement and slightly used heads that will go for the same or less than machining at some shops. I didn't mean to imply throw them away right now. Just when he wants to start making power.
