Would My Car Benefit From A High Output Aftermarket Coil?

85 305 TPI. Stock with typical bolt on & free mods. Since most seem to feel that MSD's are a waste without major mods, would a high output coil ( mines coil-in-cap style) make a noticeable difference in any way? Or is the stock Delco coil sufficient? I've got new Delco cap & rotor, TPIS wires & Bosck 4's. I'd like a smoother idle and more throttle response if possible. If so, what brand do any of you out there prefer? Thanks in advance!

I have the Accel unit on mine, it helped because the one I had on hadn't been changed in a while. I wouldn't say there was any noticeable gain or anything, but the blue wires sure are purty!!!

I noticed an extra kick in the butt, at higher RPM's, when I put in an Accel remote HEI computerized supercoil (p/n #140008). Seemed to raise my auto tranny's shift points a few rpm's, too, I think the extra power was making the trans shift later.

Now I have an MSD 6AL and MSD Blaster SS coil, and noticed no difference over the Accel coil by itself. I expected that, it's why I bought the 6AL instead of the 6A. (Actually my fiance bought it for me!)

You can use a regular MSD Blaster 2 or 3, also. You don't have to stick to a GM direct replacement, 2-connector HEI coil. I like my setup, because if I ever suspect the MSD died, I can plug in my original GM coil as a backup. Plus an external coil looks impressive

I have purchased all MSD ingnition parts: 8.5 wires, blaster coil, cap and Rotor So most people in here are saying they don't like MSD???? Also do u think i'll notice any difference I'm going from completely stock to all MSD.

I have 7mm wires on now!!!

Thanks for input

Oh, I didn't say I was against MSD... I've never had a problem with their products. I use the 8.5mm wires in addition to the 6AL and Blaster SS. But I'd caution against the 6AL (or any igniton box, for that matter) as a "first" mod. Save the expensive box for one of your last mods, and get an aftermarket coil first.

I'm more against Accel than MSD (damn cap/rotor kits always getting funked up with deposits, damn u-groove plug contacts always unscrewing under the plug boot and causing a misfire). If only MSD made a cap for my port injected V6... but I'm stuck with Accel. I tried a brand new AC cap & rotor with my 6AL, and look what happened: http://www.geocities.com/tomp_3rdgen/burnt-cap.html

Earlier this year I installed an Accel High Performance ignition module and an Accel Brute Thunder Ignition Coil (fits in cap). I had some Bosch wires, and the engine knocked like crazy. I then put in some MSD SuperConductor wires and it fixed the problem. My point is, if you get a new coil, be prepared to spend money on really good plug wires.

I couldn't tell that the coil did much over stock, but the ignition control module smoothed out my higher RPM's, and it sounded much better after 4000 RPM. I didn't notice any real gains in power or fuel economy from ignition upgrades on my 305. I think the module was worth it, but I'm still wondering about the coil...

TomP, did you use a low-resistance brush?

My ignition set-up on my 305 was as follows: stock distributor, Wells cap, MSD rotor, low-resistance brush (came with coil), Accel Brute Thunder coil, Accel performance ignition control module, MSD SuperConductor 8.5 mm wires, Champion copper plus spark plugs gapped to .045

hope this info helps

Well I ordered the MSD cap, rotor, 8.5 wires, and blaster coil. Everything on my tuned port 5.0 is stock. As a matter of fact of think it is all orginal. it had 60,000 miles on it

I had MSD on my old trans-am 305 tbi and it worked well

Accel in my opinion is garbage

With my carbed 305 I had a bog when the secondaries kicked in. I thought it was a lean condition and fiddled with that in mind for some time. Finally I took someone's advice and changed the coil to a high voltage unit. I chose a Proform 50000 volt HEI in cap type.

Presto! No more bog when the secondaries opened.

So a high voltage coil is a good investment

Hey Sitting Bull, where did ya get the PROFORM 50,000 volt coil? I saw those for both styles of G.M. HEI, Coil-in-cap, and seperate mount next to Dist. They were in a G.M. Performance Parts Catalogue from a nearby Chevy dealer. They gave part # 66943C @%27.75 for coil-in-cap style and part #66937C @ 28.95 for seperate style. I've heard these are very good , 50,000 volt coils, especially for the money. When I called the Chevy dealers around here, they all said "...unavailable, yer outta luck!" Yet they are shown in the Spring 2002 Catalogue. Tell me, and anyone else who might give a rip, where did ya get it? Thanks in advance!

I purchased my Proform coil from a local speed shop.

But any of the mail order houses like Jeg's ought to have them, too.
