nope, roller cams have steeper ramps and flat tappet lifters weren't designed to work at those angles, you'll chew up the cam and/or the lifters and possible more

I've never heard of that. I have a non roller engine, and if I wanted I could make it a roller. It takes some work, changing some things, but it can be done.

People put hydraulic roller cams in older blocks all the time. Maybe I misunderstood something here....
You will have to get special roller lifters that are linked, and there is a difference between a roller cam designed for a roller block, and a roller cam meant to be retrofitted in an older block. The retrofit cams don't have the nose of the cam cut down, and you'll have to use a cam button to keep it from walking.

sorry, i thought riley meant can you put a roller cam in an engine and use flat tappet lifters, then the answer is no, but you can convert a non-roller engine to a roller engine and then use a roller cam, i've seen kits just for this around.

If your friend has'nt had any machine work done on the block as of yet, tell him he's better off starting with a roller block, the parts will be a little cheaper, for instance Crane Cam hydraulic roller lifters
SB Chevy OE 87-99 $169.99 p/n 270-10530-16
SB Chevy Vertical Bar 55-87 $379.99 p/n 270-11532-16 Jegs
Finally got my tranny to start shifting right after a bottle of that sea-foam ****, raced it last weekend at the two day event and took second Sat. and Sun.-got to itchy in the final and got the red eye both days. What really upset me though is I did'nt know they put that stuff in the paper, so I'd pull up next to the guy just before the 1000 mark and play with 'em now I got 14.3 posted in the damn paper. That's embarassing, but it was still fun. Wish this heat would go away, I got a couple 13.8's out of it when the sun went under.

Sounds like you had fun at the track...Ive been a few times but only to watch..and laugh...alot!! Hard to believe some of the cars that run out at Scribner.....My tranny is still waiting to be installed, with the stall and shifter...neck surgery kinda slowed me down...
Thanks for the info...I never realized that. I will for sure pass it on.
How about this heat in Iowa..HOT summer! BTW were do you run your car?
I think a 13-14 second car is NOTHING to be ashamed of. Not to many running around on the street these days....all the imports, Most wont even try my car...now drive the wifes 96 Cutlass and everybody wants to race..

This summer is a bitch, plain and simple. I race every weekend out at Cedar Falls Raceway the old Anita Dragstrip, and I raced down at Tri-State once in Earlville. Earville is sanctioned by the IHRA and NHRA so their track is run pretty tight, I got asked to leave cause my car leaked tranny fluid onto the track-which I understand. Cedar Falls is laid back, lately there's been alot of folks from Minnesota coming down to get spanked by the "Iwegens". As far as playing on the street, the only cars that will play with me are american muscle, ricers around here can afford all the cosmetic garbage and the sound system, just not the speed enhancers. My wife used to drive a Saturn and constently complained of "stupid people trying to race me."
Right now I'm kinda bummed, I was supposed to take the car and get it painted next month cause right now it sure is ugly-best street sleeper I've ever owned, but after the other weekend and jumping way up in points I decided to go through with the season and try to be the Cinderella story and wait till the snow flies to get her painted.
