Installing LT4 cam in 89 L98

Hi guys
Question: I’m putting a stock LT4 production cam in my 89 L98. When I removed my stock cam there was just the thrust plate holding the cam in tight. I was under the impression that all I would have to do with the LT4 is shorten the dowel so it didn’t interfere with the timing cover. I just out the new LT4 in tonight, and it doesn’t fit that well. There is damn near a 1/4 inch of end play in it???? Do I need to add anything else?… A spacer of some kind? Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks
PJ
