cruise control toast?
cruise control toast?
my speedo on my car hasn't been working for about 4 months or so. i figured it was the cable it self that was shot so i went and put a new one in. no go, it still did not work. now somebody was telling me that it could be the cruise control unit that has gone. is this possible? they were saying that down with the speedo cable hooks up to the tranny, thats where your cruise is, and it's not working anymore. what do you guys think about that. is this a possibity?
I dont think the cruise control has anything to do with the speedo cable. You said you replaced the cable... Did you check the "sensor" in the tranny ? Are the gears okay ? A good test would be to drive around w/out the dash and see if the cable is spinning inside its housing where it comes out right behind the cluster. Then if it DOES spin, you need a new cluster.
well im pretty sure the gears are ok. not sure about the tranny sensor, is that right inside the tranny, or accessible from the outside.? what about right where the cable hooks up to the transmission, is there something there where it feeds into that could be messed? i think i remember possibly looking there and seeing it kinna fraded where it hooks up too..
but i guess the cruise control has nothing to do with weather the speedometer works or not hey. thats good i cancelled that out then.. that coulda got pretty costly.

It is definitely possible.
On the mechanical cruise, there are 2 cables; one goes from the trans to the cruise, the other goes from the cruise to the dash. The lower cable spins the cruise, the cruise spins the upper cable. The cruise regulator can screw up and prevent the speedo from working.
However, the more likely thing, is that the cruise is stuck (it gums up with age) and has broken the lower cable.
Get out and look at where the cables go, you'll see exactly how it works, a picture is worth a thousand posts.
