primeing oil pump, big prob i think
ok guys i finished my 350 and i put oil in it and got everything together and stuff and i went to prime the pump and it says go clockwise so i did but it makes liek a clunking sound and my drill can barely turn it, it actually started smokin. now is there somtin wrong with this pump cause i'd rather fix it now rather then after the egine is in. please any1 who has ever primed a car help thanks guys. ps, how did u pump up your lifters? i poured all 5 quarts in last night threw the pushrod holes to get oil in them but i can still push the rod down a little. thanks

It takes ALOT of power to turn the oil pump... I've known a couple of people to fry drills doing that, especially the little Black & Decker ¼" ones and similar weenie things...
I wouldn't worry about it.
I don't bother priming motors any more, since about the 30th or 40th one I built... doesn't really seem to do any particular good. No harm of course, but no good either. If the motor is properly built with the correct assembly lube on everything, lifters soaked, etc., there will be plenty of time for the pump to do its job once the engine starts the first time.

i have always heard that just soaking the lifter won't do the job, you must submerge the lifters in oil and the use a pushrod to actually pump the lifters a few times while submerged, this will help get the air out and the oil in. I have heard of too many people soaking the lifters and then installing them and when adjusting the rockers actually bottom out the lifters.
don't worry about it you don't need to prime the engine before you fire it and you don't need to fill the lifters with oil. it'll all be taken care of as soon as or even before the engien fires. you used assembly lube right? then you shouldn't have any problems.
