Is this timing related?

When i start my engine (LG4), it idles at around 500, which is fine, but if I give it a quick high rev, it fires smoke out of the carb and dies.

The engine was dieseling a little a few weeks ago also.

You guys think this is timing? Anything else i should look for?

It could be retarded but you could easily check the timing with a light and find out...

The car doesn't seem to have any power either. When I'm driving, I have to hold the gas to keep it idling in Neutral or with the clutch in.

I had the EGR and AIR stuff off recently to change a valve cover gasket, could these be causing the problem? I'm getting a SES light also, but the thing won't give me the codes. I jumper out the pins and the SES light just stays on.

Any help would be cool.

why don't you try trouble shooting a little. check timing with a light, make sure the mark doesn't move around, like with a bad chain. run a compression or leak down test and see what you have there. scan it for codes and see where that leads you.

Fixed...

Turns out the ENG CNL fuse was blown, which is why the ECM wouldn't give me codes and the timing wasn't automatically advanced.

I'd kinda like to know why you were dieseling. When you diesel, you shouldn't have any spark what so ever but the engine will still run. You might wanna check for abnormally high compression from carbon build up and the tops of the pistons and valves. Excessive amounts will cause an increase in compression and hold extreme amounts of heat in the tops of the pistons which can cause a diesel if your octane is low enough.

what fuse did you replace????

This sounds like it could be the fix for the problem Ive been having.
My timing wont advance and my car generally runs like S**T

If its a fuse Ill kick myself because Ive been driving it this way for 3 months

It was the ENG CNL fuse, 10 AMP fuse. If you're upside down under the dash looking up at the fuse panel, it's the one on the very top right corner. This is on an '86.
