Heads and Cam install

I want to install aftermarket heads and cam myself this fall and I was wondering if anyone knows a website that has step by step instructions for installing heads and a cam on an L98 engine. I just want to know exactly what I am getting into. I have found some sites that show heads and cam installs on LS1's but nothing for a TPI L98 engine.

Thanks

I don't know of any site, but you're in for a lot of work.

The entire front of the engine needs to be removed, radiator too. Manifolds/Headers taken off. Entire top part of engine taken off. If you have AC that most likely will need to be taken out too.

Either way TTT for ya.

Your ac doesnt have to be taken out. Just move the compressor to the side and call it good.

why don't you buy a manual, has step by step instructions and pictures, plus a lot of other info you might need

Heads and cam is about a 15 hour job for a mechanic. If it is just you and a buddy, it can take a few days. I thought it would only take 8-10 hrs. Ho ho ho!!! What a surprise I was in for.

I just did it last week. My buddy is a mechanic and I was the gopher/bottle washer, etc. We started Sunday afternoon at 2 pm and didn't finish until Wednesday evening at 9:30 pm.

That was not continuous, he has a regular job and came over in the evenings, one night until 1 am! We also had to run around finding really wierd things a few times, like an oddball size key to remove a screw in plug on the side of one head.

But if you are inexperienced and don't have help, set aside an entire weekend of 12-14 hr. days.

Thanks for your help guys. It doesn't matter how long it takes because I most likely won't get to it until the car is in storage for the winter. I don't mind taking apart the whole engine because when I do the heads and cam, I'm also going to add an LT1 intake, headers, TB, and possibly removing the AC. Am I going to have to get a custom prom to get the car to run right? I already have a custom prom from when I had the engine built into a 383 but it was programed for stock heads, stock TPI, and a mild cam. So what do you think? I really don't want to spend another $500 on the computer. Thanks again

Talk to the folks on the TPI board about the programming. Probably someone has done exactly what you have planned and can recommend a good programmer.

If you're going to be doing all that, plus the converter. I sugest you pull the engine. Would most likely be faster, and you sure don't want to scratch that paint! And you will need another prom.

I wasn't planning on doing the converter when I do the engine work this fall/winter because I have never done any driveline work before and I don't want to screw it up. Is it hard to install a stall converter? I was going to have a converter, driveshaft, and have my rearend beefed up and 3.73's installed early next summer by the speed shop that built my engine.

I was afraid I was going to need a new prom.

Did you do a heads and cam change on your car? If so, what are the specs and what were your results(1/4mi, dyno)? Thanks
