big problem starting car...help please

OK here is the deal. It is a 91 z28 with the vats key. I have two keys...the origional and the copy. Each works(sometimes). WEhen I first baught this car it would start but sometimes only click when I turned the key. A few weeks ago, I replaced the starter and the vats relay because It would only make a buzzing sound in the relay. Then it worked for like a week and now I am away at college and it wont start at all. The security light comes on then goes out after 2 seconds like it is supposed to so what could this be? Could the wires in the lock cylender be worn out or something. I dont know what it is. i can still sometimes get the car to makie the buzzing in the relay but I cant even get it to make the starter click anymore. Please help I need to get home this weekend for a car show. Thanks a lot.

You both mean an alarm system besides VATS, right?

If i just turn the alarm off by flipping the switch, will this be enough or do i have to take the whole alarm system out?

mine he had to take the WHOLE system out because it is all tied into the vats and neutral saftey switch. Now is your security light inthe dash going off after 2 seconds?

Before you go rip out your alarm take it to a professional you trust because that wiring is very complicated and if you do it yourself it might get messed up and u will never get your car to work. It might not even be the alarm it could be something like a loose wire but I know mine the alarm was messing it up.

Have you tried cleaning the VATS contacts in the ignition lock cylinder? It only takes a few minutes and may solve your problem completely.

How do you remove the ignition lock cylinder to clean it?

well if the security light remains on it is not the alarm. It is your vats system so it could be your key, lock cylender, vats unit or something like that. dont take your alarm out because it isnt broken. It is you vats so either bypass it or get a new vats unit which i have no idea how to replace or how much it is.
