OIL on SPARK PLUGS
Hmm, I think this is an "UH-OH" but im not sure.
From the top all my plugs look good. but as I unscrew them... wa-laa i see oil has gotten onto them. its all over the threads too, seems to be coming from the combustion chamber? I immidiatelly thought rings... but then if the rings were THAT bad wouldnt I have a blow by problem? (and I dont, just in case you were wondering) the oil just shows up, and its sticky black like really old oil too... Im wondering... does ANTI-SEIZE turn black and sticky when it gets too hot? I have aluminum heads, and use ANTI-SEIZE when putting in plugs... could it simply be this? or is oil getting it some other way...
oh and doesnt oil in combusion cause detonation too? havn't had a problem with that yet, but if its only a little oil... but its not a "little oil" its a fair amount, and its all over underneath the plugs, which is why Im thinking anti seize... turns to goop and leaks out following the downward slope of the angled plugs... bah any help would be nice...

valve cover gaskets most likely if its all over the threads. Oil is most likely leaking down onto the plugs. Try replacing those first if their leaking and go to the more complicated stuff next.
Edit, it could also be antiseize. That can discolor, too. The oil base in it will burn off leaving a residue if the plugs get too hot.

Most likely oil is seeping past your screw in studs , when you istalled them did you used thread sealer? Pull a couple and see how they look , if they are the problem then pull them and reinstall them with thread sealer.

thanks for the replys. I thought of valve covers and checked but that wasnt the problem, although it sure seemed like it at first. The Studs are all Lok-tited in place, perfectly, and water would be seeping out if not. Ive never heard of oil coming from Head studs... that is what you meant... head studs right?
As for oil level it remains consistant, however Gasoline was getting into my oil and thinning it out from the boost. I've installed a crank case evac system to get rid of that problem, so now oil just shoots through my right side breather at 6K.
I put NEW plugs in, and DIDNT use anti seize on these. so far, I havn't found any "oil" on them, just what looks like left-over anti seize, so I think thats all it was. But it sure looked like oil! The car doesnt burn any oil thats visible / detectable so im sure the rings are good (better be.. brand new!)
Thanks for the help, Ill add anti seize and see if the "oil" re-appears... And why would the plugs be getting too hot..? Boost maybe? The new plugs are 2 Steps colder than the old ones because i was having overheating problems and since I cant afford a radiator right now Im trying all the simple stuff like timing/plugs/fans/water wetter etc...

Well my car has a little bit of oil on one of the spark plugs. It gives a small puff of smoke when i start it if its cold. It doesnt consume any oil. So if your car isnt smoking to bad and consuming oil its probably nothing to wory about.

I had the same problem. I put teflon tape on my screw in studs for my rocker amrs. all problems went away!!!

ah you are refering to valve seal / rocker stud leak down. ill admit THATS a possibility, although it doesnt smoke at all when I first start it. I took a picture of the old plugs so you could see the "oil" on it. the plugs all have a little on the threads, but theres one with the most I didn't wipe all off like the rest. The plug wires were causing the car to miss real bad, so they got black like I was running rich, but the new plugs I put in are perfect so I know thats not a problem. I just wanted you all to see the "oil" I was referring to.

not the valve seals .... my car didnt smoke at all eather. were talking aboutthe rocker arm STUD where th erocker arm bolts too. The stud is screwed into the head. the hole for the threads goes right into the intake port.

which would mean oil consumption / burning oil which I cannot detect. somthing for me to check into for sure, however, thanks for the info!!
From the picture it mostly looks like dry fouling, except one kind of looks wet. I'm still wondering if that anti-seize can burn up and turn black.. I've never had it happen. It does look like the plugs got pretty hot though, as the ceramic part is burned. Are you running rich?
