What's the real deal??

It's time for another oil change and I'm either going with Amsoil or Mobil 1 Syn. The question is, can Amsoil really go 25K miles??? Please don't give me any links with technical talk and data numbers.....I just want what yall have experienced.

Thanks in advance...

I've been using AMSOIL since 1983. In all the vehicles I've owned in that time, plus the ones owned by my dad, brothers, etc., we've followed their 1 year/25k miles oil change, 1/2 that filter change, for every one.

Yes, it will go that far. But, I'd highly recommend using their air filters as well, because dirt injested through the air will get into the oil.

As I've said before, I have yet to wear out an engine that had AMSOIL in it. The only one I've seen fail is an '85 Olds my dad got out of the junk yard, that hadn't been properly maintained (major sludge build-up), and had been in a trailer park flood just prior to going to the junk yard. The sludge kind of glopped down to the oil pan after about 10k on AMSOIL, plugged the pump screen. I'd hardly blame that on AMSOIL, though.

How much is Amsoil compared to Mobil 1? There is a place near home that carries amsoil that I hear, but I'm at college right now. I might go with that next, since my car gets 0 miles during the school year, and just sits.

I'm not sure if it's ok to let the Mobil 1 sit in there for that long?? and not change it.

5W30 or 10W30 are both fine. They retail for about $5.25/qt. There's also a 0W30 that's about $2/qt more, but it is also rated for 35k miles or 1 year, whichever comes first. I'm using that in all my daily driver vehicles.

For a car that sits a lot, and is then "abused", they have a 15W40 diesel & marine oil that has extra corrosion protection additives and fantastic wear protection. It is also rated for gasoline engines. That's what I've got in the '57 (and will put in our horse trailer towing van at the next oil change). No problem with keeping it in the crankcase for a year.

Not many places carry it at all. Luckily, there is a local owned shop that used to carry it I will check it out.

Hmmm, marine oil ehhh, guess I'll give it a shot. Thanks.

Just saw, you just said it's rated for 35k miles, is that a typo? I thought it was 25k.?

No typo. Look again - http://www.amsoil.com/products/tso.html
"In personal cars and light-duty trucks with non-turbocharged gasoline engines: change the oil at 35,000-mile or one-year intervals, whichever comes first."

That's for the 0W30. The marine oil is 3x normal interval or one year. The others are typically 25k or one year.

As for availability, dealers will often list in the Yellow Pages under "Oils, Lubricating" or some similar catagory. Or, you can order on line.

I found a local dealer here. He wants $5.70/ qt plus 1 more qt for refill @ filter change and $10 for the filter (which of course I'll have to buy 2 of), and $5 or so for the "engine flush."

So right now I'm looking at $59.20 for an oil change.

Five7Kid: I have a K&N oil filter right now, will that work?

The K&N oil filter is pretty close. Hard to beat the AMSOIL filters for filtering effeciency and capacity, though. Typically have a higher burst pressure, too.

No comparison between AMSOIL foam air filters and K&N gauze, though. The K&N lets in as much small dirt as cheap paper filters do.

Well, no Amsoil for me today. I had an oil leak coming from somewhere so I decided to check it out, thinking it was just the oil pressure sending unit, but it turns out it's the back of my valve covers. So I see no point in spending all that money on a nice oil change if it's just going to leak out.

Oh well, I guess it was about time for a car day anyways.:lala:

Anybody know of some decent aluminum valve covers and some good gaskets to go with them?
