Speedometer Problem

Well i wasn't exactly sure where to post this but here is the problem. I have a 91 GTA and the speedometer is not working and the check engine light is on- and it runs very bad. Now we had thought that the problem was the VSS- but after installing a new one it made no difference. We checked for codes and nothing came up. So what do u think the problem is? The Speedo itself or could it be te ECM or something? Thanks

Well my dad was driving it around the neighborhood and said that the speedometer began to work for a moment and while it worked the check engine light stayed on- but also the check engine light flickered off a few times but the speedo never worked while the check engine light was off. Can anyone tell me what the problem could be? Thanks

There is a speedo cable, I think it goes to the tranny, check to make sure it's not loose or even hooked up.
