Broke a Tool Steel H-11 crane cams spring

Mods in the sig. I put on the 1.6RR when I installed the valve springs. I bought the whole kit springs, locks, and retainers.

They're supposed to be good to 7500rpms and .600 lift.
.506/.544 w/ 1.6 rockers. The pushrod was not bent.

Any and all help is greatly apreciated.

Have you talked to Crane? Might have just been a spring with a flaw in it.

They have the potential to run to 7500 rpm
On a cam and valvetrain designed to go to 7500 rpm.
Within the design limitations of a 1.26" spring.

This does not mean your set up will spin to 7500 rpm
with out valve float.

A ZZ4 hyd roller won't and doesn't need to rev near this high.
When ever you increase the rocker ratio, the rev limit
will be lower because of the now faster valve action.
Unless you modify the valvetrain.

When you start breaking valvesprings the first thing to look at is rpm. How high did you rev it? If you float the valves the springs will break.

There is a chance you got a bad or flawed spring. It does happen. But..........

....exessive rpm is usually the culprit.

I have the infamous K-motion K-700's. Never had a problem till
my trans started the 2-3 no shift stuff causing me to over rev the motor on the shift. Was changing a spring or two every week.
Actually got real good at changing springs he hee hee!! Luckily I was getting spares for free.

Now that the trans problem is fixed, the valvespring problem is gone. Runs fine to 6000 rpm.
Note: With the mild cam I have, the car accelerates best when shifted
at 5000 to 5500rpm.

When my K-700's broke it was only on start up in a certain parking spot at work. Happened twice. I don't park there no more and put in new springs. Replacing springs really suck.

The term "Tool Steel" is really ambiguous, and basically meaningless unless you know the alloy, heat treatment, and whether the material was mechanically or thermally strtess-relieved. I could wind springs from 4140 or M1 that would qualify as "Tool Steel" and would break in twenty seconds (kinda like the K-Martion springs).

It's a lot like the term "Police Package", which really means little exceept for the stigma that the sales department wants you to perceive. Remember P.T. Barnum?

I was doing a burn out at 4000 -4500 max. No more.
I didn't check the install height. They told me it would be a direct swap, but half the time they don't know what they're talking about either.

How do you check install height w/ the heads on the car? Should I spend the money and get the spring micrometer that jeg's sells?

Thanks for the help.:hail:

Usually you can use a caliper in depth mode and sneak the end of the slide onto the lower spring seat to get a fairly close measurement. Many times there is a portion of the spring seat that is machined over an unshrouded portion of the head casting that creates enough ledge to make this measurement. You would have to remove the rocker on that valve, however.
