fuel pump again? wtf?

hey
gots an 89 firebird, 350, with a carb.

am running an external electric Holley standard pressure pump.

yesterday..wouldnt sustain above 2200rpm, today, died in the parking lot, I figured it was the pump, cuz the pump is usually pretty noisy, and the pump was bairly making any sound.
replaced the pump, was running great, now it will barely idle. pump is again not noisy. its just whispering.

I have not replaced the fuel filter in about 12000miles, im going to do that tonite.
My question is, can a fuel filter just suddenly clog like that? all at once? I figured it would be a graduall drop in performance.
anything else it could be?
there is no pump relay, I have an on/off toggle switch.

I was wondering the same damn thing. I suspect a fuel filter may be my problem too. But before I replace that I want to know if it could get that clogged up in just a couple days. My car starts fine, but I have to give it gas to keep it going. It will die in the 500-2000rpm range. Over that it will run fine. Sitting still anyway. And it will stall if I am driving. A friend of mine suggested fuel filter but I am not sure.

The Holley "Red" and "Blue" electric pumps a notorious
for their short life.

They were never designed for continious street use.
They get too hot and die. Or the seal wears out and they leak.

You must use a filter on the inlet side of these pumps to protect
them from dirt.

Next time replace it with a mechanical pump or a carter electric

The carter will last A LOT longer (it was designed to) ....

If you have over 400hp run two carter pumps (parrellel)
Still cheaper than holley's.

Well I was kinda figuring that but didn't want to say without someone else backing it up. I have had my Holley Red for about a month now. It is leaking out the gasket pretty good. I just ordered the carter a few days ago. Hopefully I got the right one. I got the one that runs between 4 and 6 psi and has 72 gph free flow. I actually think for my mild 350 with quadrajet that is almost to much.

I plan on replacing the gasket in the holley and leaving it with the tools to replace it in my car so if I ever get stranded with a broke fuel pump I can swap it out.

Also I was thinking that perhaps a pressure regulator with return line would extend the holleys life. If I ever decide to add something minor like a 50 hp shot of nitrous the holley pump may come in handy.

IM dizzy!

I just replaced the fuel filter, last time it didnt make such a huge mess, but the car was jacked up in the back, must have pissed about a gallon out of there, completley soaking me.

seems to run fine now, I guess it was the filter, alhough I only started it up and didnt drive it, the idle quality is much better.
