Unknown Engine Problem :(
Unknown Engine Problem :(
I am experienceing problems with my 1986 lg4 iroc. The alternator went a time back, completely draining the battery, with the car dying. The service engine light continues to stay on even after changing the alternator, the plugs, wires, the cap and the rotor. Next i tried replacing the computer, but the car still does the same thing and does not run smoothly. The idle had to be adjusted up because it had seemed the the idle was down real low where the car would not run at all. Sometimes the car idles up faster, with the light going out, but then right back to the service engine light, and running crappy. Now the car completely runs ****ty all the time, with the service engine light on at all times. When i use the code scanner at the diagnostic port, all i hear is complete chatter, with no code. (with new computer installed) Can anyone decipher this problem? What do I have to do? Any ideas on possible parts to check?
try your 02 sensor..if its idling crappy, look for vacume leaks(just replace all the hoses)..check timing, clean the carb/tpi with cleaner, check fuel filter....see what happens from there. i think your timing is supposed to be 6deg (stock)

lets see:
electrical problem kills car, replace alternator. It doesn't run right now, why don't you replace the motor too. Man there's some bad troubleshooting going on here.
Yeah try the fuses, you might have a bad alternator, if your getting a Dirty voltage ( bad rectifier ) the computer might go screwy. Check the grounds too, there is one near the alternator, clean and check your battery connections.
oh yeah, make sure the choke is plugged in, this wil make the alternator light come on if it is disconnected and make the carun like crap because the choke won't open. SAME IF FUSE IS BAD.

engine problem?
probably your O2 or/and idle air sensor or/and MAF sensor
need 2 be replaced
sounds like the car is having a problem breathing and with the check engine light definately one of the sensor is sending out a signal. did u put it on a computer to see what Code its giving you?

What do you mean by "scrambled". the clicking you are hearing is the mixture control solenoid in the carburetor cycling when you are accessing the ecm. Thats normal. Now i'd check for the stored codes "the old fashioned" way with a paper clip and then counting the blinks from the SES light. I have an autoxray at home and i've had a few times when it didn't retrieve a stored even though there was one. I'm grabbing at straws here (since i don't have the car in front of me) but i'd lean towards the MAP sensor, coolant temp sensor, possibly a defective ported vacuum switch and/or EGR control solenoid..........
