Busted Oil Pan...How much damage did I do?

To make a long story short. I hopped a curb in the parking lot at a store that I didnt see. I didnt realize how much damage until we stopped at the mall and when I came out all of my oil was in the parking lot. I hoped it to be a quick fix but NO...I thought the bolt was loose but it wasnt. I put a bit of oil in the car so see where it leaked and its around the oil pan bolt. So I have a crack or a small hole in my pan. Now the question. To get it home we drove it a little ways and put some oil checking with the dipstick with new oil is really hard to see at night. So anyways we kept doing this running it and putting more in since it was draining fast. Well once we got into town the car started out sluggish when i started it up again and tried to go. The car felt like it was shaking. I want to know if I could of fouled a plug or something. What could it be. The car is sitting by my house with a oil pan under it. Its drained and waiting. Im getting a new pan but could it be worse? Thanks

LS,

Driving without oil (and oil pressure) for even a short distance can do severe damage to engine bearings, rings, piston skirts, the camshaft, and various other parts. You may have experienced that. Those late-night infomercials showing cars driving for miles with no oil are simply a hoax, as you may soon find out.

Once you remove the engine to replace the oil pan, I would strongly suggest inspecting the main bearings, rod bearings, camshaft lobes and lifters, and cylinders for signs of lubrication failure. Repair anything you find wrong, then replace the pan.

Yup, could be worse, alot worse. On the other hand, you might have just knocked a plug wire loose while fooling around with the oil thing in the dark. Let's hope it's no more than that.

You'll know once you get the pan off... take off a main bearing (I'd recommend the front one) and a rod bearing, look at them, if they show any signs of damage, and I do mean any whatsoever, replace them. If you have any doubt as to what they should look like compared to what they actually do look like, post pics. If it looks like there's metal shavings of any kind anywhere, replace the crank too. You can get a "crank kit" with the crank and all the bearings at most parts stores, look for the brand Standard Crankshafts, that's a good reliable stock repair type of crank.

My youngest bro did that to my car once... bent the "frame" cradle or K-member whatever you want to call it, hosed 2 wheels and tires, smashed the oil pan and pickup screen, trashed the Y-pipe, broke the exhaust manifolds, and bent both the trans case and the bell housing... ruined the whole night and even part of the next day for me...

I see you planned on replacing the engine. Now might be a good time if you want the least hassle. You may not need to, but if you planned to - just do it. You'll at least save yourself some expenses for fixing this one.

Not a flame or anything but this isnt the first time I have seen this and I want to take this chance to tell people that however much a towing bill would hurt you at the time it will be alot less expensive than replacing your engine.

I hope nothing is seriously wrong with your car.
