Big car shudder when put into gear
I've been really paying attention to this lately...can't tell if its getting worse or has always been this way. From cold start, when shifting from park to rvs or drv, the whole car shudders/heaves/lurches.....you get my meaning.
After driving around for a while...i.e run to store, come back out and start car and put into drive, it does not seem as bad, but still feel a little jolt.
Anyone got a clue??

sounds to me like one of your u-joins died. have someone look under the car at the drive shaft when you put it in gear and see how much it jerks. i bet that is your problem. u-joints are like 10 bucks and aren't too horrible to change. it does require removing the driveshaft.

My Z does somthing similar when put in rev. or dri. from a cold start. It is kinda like a rough idle but after the car warms up it doesn't do this any more, just after the car has set and cooled completly it does it again.

I'd bet the reason for that is, when you're starting cold, your idle speed is higher (I know that on mine, when I first start it, it shoots up to 1500RPM and very slowly goes down). When you put it into gear with that higher idle, it's almost as if you were giving it gas when putting it into gear (but, instead of your foot giving it gas, the idle air control is manipulating the engine speed).
When you're at operating temperature, your idle has lowered (~800RPM idle for me), so when you put it into gear with the lower idle, there's less engine speed there to make it lurch.
That's how I've always thought of it, anyway. If it bothers you and you really want to pamper your car, wait until it warms up a bit (and the idle comes down), then put it into gear.

Interesting replies....Will check out u-joint cause they prob need to be replaced anyway. And will see how it goes after I let the car idle down a bit before putting into gear.
thanks guys

I posted about this awhile back, didn't really find a good answer. Let us know about the U joints, I think mine are still good and I have the same problem. It feels like the car lurches or jumps down or something... it's hard to explain.
Mine has always done that. I never thought anything of it. When cold it does jump pretty good but i just figured it was the high idle like the previous post said. Psst if you are going to take the driveshaft out you mid as well stick an alluminum driveshaft in there.
