Why is the 1982 TransAm so hard to find????

Hey guys, I've been on the look-out for a decent 1982 TransAm, in particular, an original Black & Gold one .

I can't seem to find one anywhere I look... all I'm looking for is a decent rolling chassis with all the original parts (minus the engine). Where's the best place to look?

Thanks!!!

Just wondering why you're set on an '82? Is it cause of the color combo? Weren't the Recaros rather rare?

Well, my last 1982 TransAm was a very abused Recaro that was missing the recaro seats, etc... and it was repainted white.

The reason I really like the 82 TransAm is it's sleek look. Granted, it looks pretty much the same as the others, and I certainly like the 85-89 Front-end that the TransAms had....

But I really like the look of the 82-83 TransAms. In particular, they have that vented front dual grill, they have the fender flares that are a more conservative version of what the 70-81 TransAms had... it just appeals more to my taste.

The color scheme, gold and black, is also very cool IMHO.

All I REALLY want is a rolling chassis with a relatively rust-free body. Then I'll buy a used 350 4-bolt somewhere, rebuild it with HO or Camel heads, make it non computer controlled (most computers are torn out in those earlier ones anyway) and keep it looking stock while running mid 13s.

That is a nice looking car. I'm not sure about wheels though, I'd have to see a side view.

Looks good but

is that the original hood? I didnt think they made the cowl hoods until the formulas were introduced.

1982 trans am

Actually the trans am cowl style hood was actually used on the late 81 but only so many cars were produced with them but in 82' pontiac was able to use it on the up coming 82 t/a's plus it was a much better fit and personally I like it ,right now I am converting my 91 ' to 82 stock ,I have aready added the 82 style fender flares and am now in the process to swap rear bumper and tail lights to older stock .

P.S.
As far as finding a 82 t/a in mint or good condition good luck!....
it will be very expensive and a hard find or you can alter newer stock ,there are a large number of conversion companies that produce seats ,seat covers and cowl inductor cover for the flat hoods is also availiable and hub cap replacements too!...so converting newer stock to older style can be down but it will not be cheap!

Actually the black and gold Trans-AMs are Recaros. And they are very rare indeed. There were only 2000 of them made. Many of them have not survived to this day. And those finned stlye rims on that car are original Ta rims but not for the Recaro. They just lack the bowling ball style hub caps. Which had a problem staying on. If you ever want to change wheels from the finned style ones to another style I know a shop that will buy tons of those rims. He'll buy as many as you can find. Hubcaps for them too.

The cowl induction hood was actually introduced on the 1981 Trans-AM. Again on the 1982-84 TA. 81 non-functional. !982-84 had a functional hood and the hood was never seen again until 1987 when it was brought back for the Formula Firebirds. However in it's third incarnation it was not functional. However what really kicks *** is I saw a damn good aftermarket cowl hood for the 4th gen TAs. I saw it once and have never seen it again.

WHY ASK WHY?

Well its obvious that every once in while a great car comes along and the trans am was it for me, ever since I saw SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT it turned me on to muscle cars and sparked my interest but the 82' trans am did it for me ,the first time I saw it,that was all I ever wanted and yes years would go by as I patiently waited and yes other people tried to offer my a free car of some sort I even turned down a free 66' fastback mustang in mint condition because I had a goal to get the trans am and so my very first purchase would be a 84 ' trans am but it had a 350 H.O. auto-over-drive and now here I am today with a 91 t/a but if you ask me I would personally prefer the 82' but I got what I got and it works great for me!......I would go to the junk yard and look for really good parts with very little rust and sometimes when I go to a pick-a-part or some salvage yard I tend to find perfectly good bodies with just blown engines and I think to my self,..man if I had the dough I would buy a body for full restoration and customize the suspention and drop a new 350 in it and totally do what only so many have ever done before, hit 65mph in less than
2 seconds and remember not to eat breakfast & lunch too!

LOL! Yeah, those rims sure suck... they're the worst ever, can't believe that the original Knight Rider KITT car used them. 'Fact I'll take a few off anyone's hands if they don't want them, either. I'll melt them down to destroy them, honest.

And I'll bet ya that's the -same- reason that the '82 Trans Ams are the hardest ones to find...

Hey, 82-T/A, what's the deal with the front bumper? Shouldn't it have -smooth- bumper inserts, and not the vented ones? I thought the 82 Trans Am had the smooth inserts, regular Firebirds had the vented inserts.

1982 Trans AM

I'm Also looking for a 1982 Trans AM, with T-Tops, must be a auto. I want to build myself a KITT replica, and want to be as authentic as possible. Would anyone of you know where I could find one?! I don't care what color, I gotta repaint it anyway. I don't have much money yet though, still in school! (17years)
