distibuter installation

I am putting the 305 tpi back in my 86 Z after a long 2 month down time. Im new to working on cars as explains why it took me two monthes to rebuild an engine. I am going to put the distibuter back in the 305 but dont know the procedure. Could somebody run though it for me? Much thanks and any help is appreciated.

I post this in detail every once in a while, the last time was a few weeks ago, do a search on my userID and the word "CCW" over the last month, it should come up.

bring the engine up to TDC on the compression stoke then when you drop the distributor in make sure the rotor is pointing in the direction that would be no. 1 on the distributor cap

since you built the engine did you put the timing gears dot to dot or straight up? if dot to dot install the distributor with the rotor pointing to number 6 post on the cap and if both dots straight up install the distributor with the rotor pointing to number 1 post on the cap. holmes left out a few details to confuse you a little, like what cylinder you might want to put on the compression stroke and how to tell, but since you built the engine you already know what cylinder is on the compression stroke and where the dots are
