Question about Pulleys and belts
Can I switch from a serpentine belt to the old style individual belts coming off the crank pulley to operate the water pump, alternator, a/c, power steering? Would this work? What would I do with the belt tensioner and has anyone done this? I am not a big fan of the serpentine belt because if the belt wears out for any reason everything is unusable.
You could change, since many people are changing the other way ('V' belt to Poly V). I'll bet you could even exchange your setup with someone who is planning to install the Poly V. Remember though, your water pump will need to be changed, since it will now rotate in the op[posite direction.
I understand that you are relying on a single belt for all accessories, but the Poly V drives are quite reliable, lighter, stronger, and more efficient than the older style 'V' belts. The only types that are more efficient are HTD or Gilmour type belt drives.
If you are concerned, perform an inspection of the belt when you are doing your other routine maintenance, and replace it when it shows signs of cracking or wear. Do the same with your hoses, too. Don't forget the vacuum lines. If you follow the factory prescribed maintenance schedule, you'd be doing that anyway:
