Pulsing, Bucking, then SES...
Okay, here's my problem, and my engine is in my sig:
For awhile now I have had a smoking coming from the rear of the engine on the Passenger side. When I took it to our local meet recently I was unable to reproduce this smoking so I never have gotten that issue resolved. Anyway, Sunday (10/6) on a hunch I checked the transmission fluid to see if this was causing the smoking. Well the tranny dipstick read a quart low and looked like it needed changing. I added a quart and headed to autozone to get a tranny filter, gasket, and fluid. Autozone didn't have my tranny filter so I didn't get the fluid changed. I don't know if this has anything to do with whats wrong now, but thought I would note what I have done to it recently.
Well now yesterday I start getting a pulsing of the engine and bucking and jerking of the car after a stop light. Last night on my way home, I make a left turn onto my street and I get the engine pulsing, the bucking and then the SES light came on. After I got on my street and straightened out, the light went away and the engine smoothed out.
Well I got the same thing again this morning at a stop light. The light turned green, i gave it gas and it started bucking and jerking yet again but no SES light.
I don't have a scanner to pull the code that it sprung, but does anyone have a good idea what is going on here?

Without a scanner, whats a paper clip going to do? Sorry, but I don't see what is going to happen when I do that.

The quick sum of it is you short pins A and B.
Turn the ignition key to the on position, BUT DO NOT CRANK THE ENGINE. Cranking the engine while the pins are shorted may damage the ECM.
The SES light should start flashing.
The code will be as follows.
Flash..Long Pause..Flash..Short Pause..Flash..Long Pause
This will happen three times, 1 Flash followed by a pause then 2 flashes and pause.
Code 12 will be displayed first, then whatever codes is in the car.
When all the codes are done flashing, code 12 will reappear. The SES will just cycle through all the codes over and over.
Ex. Codes, 12,32,12
Flash Flash..Flash
Flash Flash..Flash
Flash Flash..Flash
Flash..Flash..Flash Flash..Flash

Thanks Slade, but I took Post *****'s, uhh I mean Mark's advice and searched for Vader's posts on paperclips and found it.
Okay now that I've performed the step, the ecm flashed a 1 and a 2 (12) and then a 3 and 4: 34. That was the only thing that came up, before recycling to the 12 signal.
So according to the codes list 34 reads 2 possibilities as follows:
34: MAP sensor voltage high-pressure high/vacuum low
34: MAF signal high - flow low (EFI/TPI/SFI)
I take it only the first one applies to TBI. So I have a vacuum leak somewhere, correct?

Bumping this up with an update:
Okay, I pulled the code with the paper clip as my previous post explains and I got the code #34 for MAP sensor low vacuum.
Well, the SES light has not triggered yet, so I was wondering if this was a fluke, or a warning sign that something is on its way out the door.
Oh and on the smoking problem: one side smoking I would just dismiss as a valve cover oil leak, but now it smokes from both sides, again the aft end of the engine. Remember, the engine only smokes after a 30-minute commute, or 30+ minute cruise. Is there anything else it could be? Head gaskets ready to blow/blown? I need to change the tranny fluid first then check for smoking?
Any suggestions guys?

Bumping this up again...
Okay, after pulling the code and getting the 34 code for MAP sensor voltage high/vacuum leak, I have yet to throw the code again, but i have encountered the jerking/bucking of the car several more times. Should I just replace the MAP sensor, or should I really look for a vacuum leak (how?where to start?)???
Just a little more help guys.

Hey Mark Shields,
I still need answers to this problem. I got the SES light again this morning. Seems worse on morning COLD starts. Both times the SES light has triggered, its been cold.

that happened to me once before on my camaro. it turned out to be a loose clamp on the MAF sensor, and the engine was taking in more air than it thought. sometimes it's the really stupid, overlooked things that don't cost anything to go out and check

check and make sure the little plastic/rubber vacuum line going to the MAP sensor isn't broken/torn. that maybe the problem. the lines become brittle and break casuing a vacuum leak. thus leading to your code 34. if not you might just go ahead and replace it if there is no vacuum leak. your ecm is very dependent on correct map sensor readings.

i didnt see any obvious leaks in that tube on mine, but anyways, where do you get one of those???i mean that hard plastic vac. line that goes from the MAP sensor??? do you have to go to the dealer??

you can always trace where the plastic vacuum line goes. measure the the length needed and go the the auto parts store. purchase the amount needed and "try" is out. if that solves the problem then the plastic hard line is the problem. if not more than likely the sensor is bad. be sure and check that vacuum exists at the vacuum source for the map sensor.
