Weird oil leak.....
Weird oil leak.....
I have an 86' LB9 engine and have an apparent oil leak on the back of the motor. It is not the intake manifold as i have already replaced this gasket with a phat bead of rtv. The oil pressure sending unit (bell-shaped device?) seems to be a little wet. Now, i have tried to seal this before and it did help and raised my pressure a little. I have a high pressure spring in the pump itself. My question is.... is it possible for the oil pressure sender or the oil pressure drop off switch to leak like this. I have a hunch it might be the sender. Heard of anything like this before??

I have had many oil leaks that appeared to be coming from one particular area, when in fact it was the valve cover leaking! If the oil is clean it is very difficult to see it running down, until it appears on the starter or the oil pressure switch or oil filter etc. Check it before blaming something else.

Andy is right, that oil from valve covers can go everywhere. They're always suspect.
But to answer your question, yes the sending unit absolutely can leak, and that's usually part of how they fail. If your gauge reads funny and the thing leaks, that's about as clear an indication as posible that you need to replace it, short of it completely falling off.
