Me too.

What's your budget on this project, hands down the 350 is better.

If your current 305 needs work to the shortblock, throw it away and get a 350.

Folks have argued it strictly from an economic point of view and it ALWAYS comes out more cost effective to get the 350 in such a case.

However, if the 305 is in good shape, then build it with parts that will work effectively on a 350, because when the 305 dies that is the only sensible engine to replace it with, money-wise $$$

Surprise the Mustangs.... yeah right

The single best mod you can do to a 305 while rebuilding the short block, is to add .264" to the bore, by replacing the block. This is the cheapest power you can buy. A junk bare block costs $50, and on a 300 HP motor, turns it into a 345 HP motor. That's about $1 per HP. I dare you to find any other mod that even comes close to that impact at aywhere near that price.

The problem with the 305 is not that there's any problem with the 305, as such. The 305 is a great motor. If it existed in a vacuum, free from alternatives, then we would all do what we would have to do, with a 305.

But that's not how it is. It doesn't exist in a vacuum. It does have alternatives. One particular alternative is plentiful, cheap, and a direct replacement; and existed before the 305 was even a concept, let alone a product.

Anything you can do to a 305, you can also do to a 350. Any part that fits a 305, will fit a 350. Any mod you can make to a 305, you can make the same mod to a 350. There's only one significant difference: You get 15% more when you do it to a 350!!! It's just like going to the grocery store to buy a can of soup or something. Imagine the scenario: you have one can sitting on the shelf, with x number of ounces in it; right next to it, you have an absolutely identical can of soup, same ingredients, same manufacturer, same everything; even the same price! The only difference is, the other can has 15% more in it. Now what kind of a moron would look at that situation and tell himself, "I'm so smart, I'm going to show everybody that I can get a better deal by buying the small can of soup. Everybody buys the big can; I'm going to show them!! I'm going to be different and I'm going to buy the small one."

Now I'm an idiot, and well known everywhere I go and in everything I do as someone who doesn't know what they're talking about and has no common sense; but that is too ridiculous even for me.

Doing stuff to a 305 makes perfectly good sense, as long as you don't have to touch the short block. Heads, cam, induction systems, exhaust, gears, ..... do all of those things to your 305. But the minute you have to touch the short block, there's where the common sense of "using what you've already paid for" ends. If you are replacing pistons, then you have to pay for boring, honing, vatting, a set of pistons, a set of rings; and all of those things cost exactly the same, or less, for a 350 compared to a 305. All you need is a block!!! $50!!! You don't even have to change the crank or the rods if you don't want to.

So, you go right on and be different; just, please don't embarrass the rest of use too bad in the eyes of the rest of the world when you lose. Nobody cares what you lost with; all they will notice is that you went across the finish line last. Enjoy it, and savor the feeling of losing, and come back and ask for help; and everybody will tell you to put a 350 in your car instead. But, you will have just wasted about $1000 that you can't recover, on a 305 block; $1000 more to fix it, instead of $50 to do it right on the front end.

As usual, well said RB.
On the other hand, *****'s car is a fine example of doing things a little different, and doing it well.

Bull didn't add his sig, which would have clearly shown that he's running a 305. RB didn't say it, but he's running a 305.

So am I.

I agree with everything they said. I will add this: If you don't fix the "external" things that are wrong with the 305, especially LG4 and LO3 305's, then it's money wasted to just put in a 350. The exhaust and air cleaner on LG4 and LO3's are terrible, and will run about $800 to fix. However, that's the right place to start, and a good way to spend $800. 140k miles isn't sufficient reason to rebuild an engine: Mine had 144,600 on it when I drained the fluids for the mods in the sig. It has ~156k on it now, and is running fine. Typically, a 140k 305 will need gaskets & seals to bring it up to modifying-snuff. I'll start there any day, vs. spending $800 to fix the necessary external stuff, plus another $800 rebuild a 305 that may not need it or buying and rebuilding a 350 that will only take me from 300 to 345 HP.

Our rallying cry: "Remember the 'My Generation Camaro' 350..."

Never mind. They've made bad decisions and exhibited poor execution from the beginning.
