"service engine" light, please help!
"service engine" light, please help!
I have an 89 RS TBI 305. I just rebuilt it and it only has about 80 miles one it. Today I was driving and the service engine light came on. I was on the freeway and nothing seemed to have happened. But I got off the freeway and turned into some parking lot. When I slowed down and stopped the enigine was kind of pulsating, from about 700 to 400 RPMs. I drove the rest of the way home and in the drive way it was doing the same thing, but it got worse and now it dies when it is in gear. When it's in park or neutral it has a nice even idle. What could be causing the problem???
Also, I was reading the repair manual and it talked about the trouble codes being stored in the ECM. What does this mean? How do you find out what the trouble code is? Please help!!!

all you have to do to read the codes from the ECM is the following:
1. obtain a small piece of wire, about 4'' long
2. notice under and to the right of the steering wheel the terminal for the ECM (it will be covered by a piece of black plastic, just slide it out of the way)
3. put one end of the wire in the very upper lefthand part of the terminal and put the other end in the slot directly to the left of it.
4. turn the key to run, NOT START!
5. look at the check engine light. it should blink once, pause, then have 2 consecutive faster blinks. this is a code 12 and means the ECM is working properly. after this, it will flash all codes stored in the computer.
5. the codes will consist of one or two blinks, a pause, and then a number of blinks. the first number of blinks is the first number (if it blinks twice, then its a code 2x) the second flashes are the second number (if it flashes 3 times, x=3, then its a code 23) and so on.
