Well, it happened
Well, it happened
I took a gamble and lost. The TA was parked in the garage and almost out of gas. Since I was trying to fix a problem with the fan not coming on, I had to leave it running to heat it up. I figured it was time to get some gas.
My wife and I drove it up to a gas station, mostly to fill the tank and put air in the tires, but also to see how it runs (hasen't been run in about a year).
The gas station is no more than a mile or two from our house. All 25 mph residential roads. Not more than 100 yards after we leave the gas station for home, the dreaded flashing lights show up in the mirrors.
I get pulled over with no insurance on the car, no registration, expired tags, expired inspection / emmissions, and no license.
Sounded bad when the officer mentioned $700 in fines for all the offenses, but he have me a break. I have 21 days (instead of the usual 5) to get the TA registered, insured, and inspected to avoid all the fines. Since the car still has so long to go before we really want to use it, we hadn't planned on doing that stuff any time soon (it just sits in the garage).
I guess I am not really venting b/c I deserved it, and the cop actually gave me a break on it. Just couldn't believe my luck that I got nailed in the 3 minutes it takes to drive home from the gas station.
Wish me luck with the bill and the ensuing rebuild!

hmm i guess im kinda lucky becuz the day before doing my exuast work on my car i had no exuast just the y pipe and manifolds and we were bringin the car up too my skool so i could put the exuast on it and as we were goin and crusing at aboput 2000-2500 rpms this local cop drives right next to us and we dont even look becuz i know we were goin to get pulled over and he just keeps on goin. after seein him pass we were like :that was lucky: and well we had it registered and insured but inspected and the sticker was about 6 moths old
There probably isn't much you can do about the registration and inspection, but the insurance is another matter. I understand that most states require a proof of insurance prior to issuing a license plate, but you have some options with your insurance. You can apply for and receive the insurance coverage, get your registration and inspection, then suspend the insurance coverage (not cancel, but suspend) when you park the car again. I do it about this time every year on several cars, since they just sit in the garage waiting for spring to arrive. The policies remain in effect, and the balance of the insurance period begins as soon as I pick up the phone and call the agent. I save a few bucks that way, and I still maintain full comprehensive coverage just in case something happens while they're parked. It's less than ten bucks per vehicle for six months of comp coverage, so most of the value of the premium I've paid is sitting there waiting for me to reactivate it.
Either way, look at the bright side - it's still cheaper than $700 in fines AND the other costs afterward.

I have a friend who was taking a car home and they put different plates on it. They didn't do anything wrong, but the night before one of that towns police had a car stolen and it was identical to his (not the same one) and the cops car had a shotgun in the back of it. So they pulled him over to check it out and found out it had false plates on it.
