stock tach questions inside!
A few months ago, my tach started acting funny. It cut out for a bit, then was ok. Last week, it started cutting out, engine ran fine, the tach just started cutting out to zero. I pulled my dash apart...could not get the head light **** off? Anyway, the tach started to jump a little when i moved some wires around but the tach still would not work at all? I noticed that the female end has some sort of cheap plastic connectors, almost like a plastic sheet with contact points on it? How can i repalce it? I think it is bad, also, what wires on the male end are responsible for the movement of the tach?
This is a camaro dash. Is there anyway I can check to see if or where there is power by using a testlight? I think the tach is dead, however, i do not know how to check it?? Any suggestions? I pulled thedash out and tried to clean the conncections with electric contact cleaner, re mated the conncetions but nothing!
Raiden,

hmm as far as testing the guage...I would take the face of the guage cluster and pull the tach...start the car and check the contact points for the tach, I think there is 3 posts that plug in, one is power and one is ground, most likely. A plain test light should work.

Vader,
I did not find the pressure relief button on the headlight ****? And I did use a test light the other day, only found one hot spot on the gauge cluser. I guess it's a matter of knowing what wire does what? I have a useless haynes book
need to get a helm! I would greatly appricaite any direction to at least finding out if the tach is dead or just a bad contact. It was acting like a bad contact, then went completely dead. I have taken off the crane ignition and put the stock setup on but no change.

Well, I found out why my Tach was not working! I always think it is a good thing to tell everyone the results so If anyone has the same problem, they will be able to figure it out by reading the archives. The white wire from the coil has a little grey connector. I put a test light to both sides, it checked out OK. I tired to reconnect them but no reuslts, tach sitll did not work, so i cut the wire & connected them Now my tach works! Thaks for all the help and suggestions!
