cracked block

A friend of mine has a 400ci SBC that came out of a boat. One of the water jackects had a small crack in it that was professionally repaired. Is this possible? how would this engine hold up in a car. He said it was welded. Thanks!

BMF,

I'd listen to Ed on that one. If the case was welded correctly, you should have no problems regardless of where the engine is installed. Nickel alloy filler works great with iron castings for a weld that is stronger than the iron. As long as it was done correctly, there should be no stresses in the casting. If the crack was only in an external cooling jacket, I wouldn't even sweat it. Even cracks in the webs can be repaired if done correctly. I've welded a few iron heads for porting and never had a problem, as well as a few other pieces of iron.
