Problem with starter--HELP!!!

Okay, check this out. I did a search but could find what I was looking for. Here is the problem I'm having with 92 Camaro RS. Every once in a while (at least once a week) I go to start my car. When I turn the key the car doesn't start. I hear the solenoid "pop" but the engine doesn't turn over. Now, here is what pisses me off. Most of the time if I let it sit for a while and try it again it starts right up.

I have good voltage, battery is new, terminals are clean. It doesn't really happen after I've driven it. Most of the time it is when I first start the car that day. It will "pop" but not turn over.

I've got a crappy alarm on it that doesn't work and I was thinking that might be the problem. Do you think it could be the alarm thats messing up the starting or could it be something else?

King,

The alarm certainly would be suspect. It would be best if you could restore the factory wiring and eliminate the alarm relay to make sure. If you're certain the alarm relay and wiring are O.K., there isn't much left but the starter solenoid, VATS interlock, neutral safety, and ignition switch. As long as the VATS light doesn't remain lit when you try to start, the VATS system is probably not locking you out.

I am suspect of your starter assembly. So it doesnt start at the beginning of a new day, or right after you have driven it somewhere. Go to the technical articles and fin "Hot Start Cure" and that will turn up some answers, either way. You are going to need to replace your solenoid, you can either buy the whole starter with the solenoid at autozone for about $30 with core, or you can buy a new Solenoid for about $10. But if you decide to go the hot start cure, then you will need to buy a Mustang solenoid, and some other various things. Hope that helped,

Thanks guys. This really helped out a lot. I'm going to rip the alarm out and do the "hot start cure" just for the hell of it. That way I don't have to worry about it anymore.

Thanks again.
