cam choice

i might get a new cam for my 283 with 041 heads. right now i have a 204int 214exh dur at .050 and .422 .444 lift. i want to have a rough idle and have mostly power from 2500 to 5500. i an thinking about a comp magnum 270h which has 224 224 dur and .470 .470 lift. how does this sound, or what would be better? i want to not lose too much vacume(if i do how hard is a vacume resvoir to get in?) and i have a stock converter. whould there be much change in gas mileage with more cam?

i have a 78 malibu with a 305, i might put my old camaro cam in that if i get a new cam. how does my cam i have the specs for above compare to a .2484int and .2667exh lobe lift cam?

cam

usually when u buy a cam it has to go with the chasis setup (vice versa).your definitly going to need to change the converter and maybe gears. i dont have a 283 but my 350 has a 246@.05 .525 lift cam it idles at 10 -11 inches.my power brakes still work.although i need a bigger cam but thats another story.i have a ten inch converter th350.it works pretty good with my setup.if your going to drive it on the street id stick with the 224 unless u like a car that shakes the **** out of u

If you want alot of cam for a 283, look at a Comp 12-309-4 muscle car cam replica... put 1.6 rockers on it. I think there's a couple of us around here that have had motors with that one in them.

VIPER,
HERE IS MY OPINION:
This is what I did to my 283. Bored it .080, wanted to go .125(302), but machine shop did not want take the chance of going that far. Had some 461 camelheads laying around the garage and had them shrouted to 2.02/1.60 valves. Cam is (Crane-Blueracer) 230/230 @.50 480/480 lift. Put a Performer RPM and a 670 Holley Street Avenger. Also mine is a medium journal.
The trans is a 700R4 Probuilt w/A.C.T. 3000 stall. Hope to just have this engine in there until I finish my 406. Could be a setback with Iraq situation being im in the Army and getting deployed.
