This is a long shot, but, this sounds familiar.
I don't know what setup you have, BUT it is possible that the gear sound you heard was the starter engaging while you were driving. This would seem to be consistent with the non start later, and then cooling down and restarting normally.
As you accelerate hard, the engine torques over. The starter solenoid wire (and other starter wires) move slightly (with the movement of the engine) and shorts to the big live wire (or connector) on the starter. This causes the starter to engage and the pinion is turned by the flywheel making that awful "gear" noise. This will overheat the starter causing a no start. The solenoid is obviously working because of the clicking.
Get under the car and check all the wires to the starter VERY carefully for rubbing, corossion, looseness etc.
As I say, this is a long shot, but I had to diagnose this a few days ago when my neighbours 4 banger was doing the same thing. His starter ran all the time the engine was running. The starter solenoid (command) wire was wrapped tight around the main lead from the battery and had rubbed through-thus causing a permanent live to the solenoid. All I did was move the wire away and tape it up. But this didn't start until he accelerated hard!
Really hope this helps
Andy.

That "gear-sound" might also have been an alternator bearing or drive belt taking itself out to lunch. After a time the battery may have recovered enough to restart... maybe. More information would be a definite "plus" in this situation.
