for a lot of people who build their own engines and actually build their car to what they want do it for the pride. the first time they get on the gas it kind makes u the happiest guy or gal in the world since u did it. i would say alot of us its pride.

then there are lots of just stupidity out there. thats another story

Depends on the context. Most people I see drive fast because they're idiots. If you really looked into the minds of people and looked at why they're doing it, I think you'd see that it was for acceptance. People drive fast because they think it will impress others, which is why they drive with their windows down and their base pumped up, even though they have air conditioning. They look stupid to a lot of us, but they think it's making them look cool. They see people gawk and drool over the fast and furious cars and think they'll get the same attention if they build a half assed ugly car similar to those. It's popular; they want to be popular.

On the other hand, a lot of car enthusiasts drive fast because it's fun and they want to enjoy what they've built. When you see a club going on a cruise or something, they're doing it for fun. Racing is about going fast. They race to enjoy what they've won and also to show off their accomplishment. A responsibly person doesn't drive fast on surface streets. That's the fool that crashes into dividers, poles, and houses. The difference between responsible and irresponsible drivers(in the case were talk about here, driving fast) is, in my eyes, a matter of who they're doing it for. The people that speed around the streets recklessly aren't doing it for themselves(except if they're late or something, that's an exception), they're doing it in order to impress other people. The people that drive carefully, but race and take pride in their cars, are doing it for themselves. Make no mistake, there's always some sort of popularity thing in it, but that's only what drives fools.

As you say with the adrenaline, that's definitely an important part of it. But if you're doing it for the rush, it's less likely that you're the one driving like that everyday and everwhere because it'd lose it's effect. Just my opinions here. Good luck with your paper.

Like rezinn said most people you see speeding are trying to show off to other people. Going in and out of traffic like an idiot. The only time I speed around people is when I'm running late or there is some sort of an emergency and when I do it's not excessive and I don't cut people off. When I do speed for "no reason" it's mostly at night on an open highway if there is no one else on the road. I like not having people around me and just hearing the engine or the tires on the road or seeing things go by at whatever speed I'm going at is something I like to do for fun. I guess it's an adrenaline rush. Over all I don't think it's worth the ticket or endangering mine or others around me, you just feel like it sometimes and nothing is cooler.

My reasons
  • Late Somewhere
  • Racing
  • Open highway......daytime or nightime........it's fun
  • trying to catch up to a car full of girls........
  • trying to make a green light

Racing is a adrenaline rush, speeding is fun, cutting people off and acting like an idiot is not......

Speed is addictive.

You mod the car and go 14s, few months, man I want 13s, little longer, come on 12s,, I dont' know where it will stop for me, prolly when I'm broke and in debt.

All of the above, and these:

1. It's forbidden. We're not supposed to drive fast on the street because it's against the law. That makes it unknown, or relatively unknown territory which makes it exciting.

2. The thrill of tempting danger. Same reason why people sky-dive. It's fun because it's quasi-dangerous. Adreniline (sp)

3. Because we CAN! Funny, before I purchased my current car I'd never really had a fast car of my own (I'm more of a truck kinda guy). I used to race all over the place. Now that I know I'm faster than 90% of the cars out there I seem to drive slower, unless I'm in a hurry or some other out of the ordinary situation.

I like what Mark said, it's very true, at least in my case. It's the "Law of Deminishing Returns". We always want more because repeating the same experience doesn't return the same thrill.

I've never been able to figure out the "need for speed".

I've been to 150 MPH in a '94 Z28 and it was cool, but not something I feel I need to do again.

I'm an acceleration junky. It's like Mark said "....go 14s, few months, man I want 13s, little longer, come on 12s....". I like QUICK ACCELERATION!!!

If I ever get a car that'll go 150 MPH in the 1/4 mile, then I will die a VERY happy man. But going 150 MPH over a 2-3 mile stretch didn't thrill me that much. Once I felt the car starting to drift and 'hang' a little, it wasn't fun anymore.

i'm in the same boat, i used to have a slow-*** s10 blazer but after getting my camaro i find myself (usually ) driving slower because i know every cop i pass will clock me. i never do more than 5 over unless i'm going a long way (hour+) which is really the only time speeding will save a significant amount of time. there's also the rush, i've only had my car up to about 115 but even that was enough
