Whats the easiest way to press out the wrist pins?

I just messed up a connecting rod with a little bit too much heat trying to press out the stock wrist pins. Before I mess anything else up, I figured I'd find out how you guys are doing it. I was holding the piston in a vise and heating up the rod with a torch. When it started to get hot, I would press the pin out with the vise. It takes quite a bit of heat to do it this way, and I think that's why the rod got tweaked. BTW, it's an L98.

Bad idea..you are about to destroy your rods..let a machine shop handle this.

Why dont you take them to someone with the proper tools and have them do it? It'll save alot of time, headache, and rods.

we did it with a hydraulic press and no heat. worked fine for us. but, if you wanted to be on the safe side, let a machine shop do it.

You press them out cold with a hydraulic press.

You install them by heating the con rods. When heated up enough, the end of the con rod will turn blue.

Man,take those to the machine shop before you destroy them.I dont think you are supposed to put heat like that on rods anyway.

wrist pin removal

My machine shop removed the pins from old pistons cold without breaking anything he did have a special tool that took up the extra space between the rod and piston. The tool actually cost 1500 dollars. They preesed the pistons using heat on the rods only.
