Spark Plug gap vs flatter torque curve
Spark Plug gap vs flatter torque curve
Anyone have results of the relation between spark plug gap and ability to maintain torque into the midrange rpm band.
I was thinking that provided your ignition system is up to task, a larger gap would give you better ability to ensure a good burn at midrange rpm since there is more spark essentially.
Any downsides to running larger gap?
Stock 35 to say 45?

You might gain 0.002% more HP by opening up the gap, as long as it can still fire reliably.

With the HEI's the minimum gap I'd have is .045, I got a little better than stock and run mine at .060 w/ no problem. HEI's got zing and can handle the wider gap w/ no problem.

I'm wondering if I should go through the trouble of it because there are quite a few people now I've talked to that have re gapped theirs to say 45 or 55 and have said that their midrange improved somewhat.
I wouldn't have thought much about it till I saw a dyno result of a 45 gap tpi vs a 35 gap tpi and the curve was more noticibly flatter. The slope of the drop off after peak torque was significantly less. The ignition system was a jacob's 65000 V so I wasn't really sure though how much that comes into play or not...

i doubt youll genuinly gain much if its already properly gapped. The differences would probably be too small to conclusivly see with a stock, or near stock setup.
