Loud Noise
I just got my engine together. I put new piston rings and main and rod bearings in. How do you tell if one spun? Because there is a loud noise coming through the enging, sounds like a really loud lifter of something. And a second question is i disconnected the distributor wire to set the timing, the car starts and shuts right off, I cannot not get it to start without that wire connected. Help please.

As for the knocking noise...is it a old flywheel(ring gear)? Sometimes these crack, and can cause a knocking sound. As for the wire issue. I am asssuming this is a TPI engine right...You may be disconnectiong the wrong wire. What colour is the wire you are disconnecting????

the timing is probably the least of your problems but the timing connector is a single wire connector located above the heater box in the wire loom running overhead. Dont pull the 4 pin connector out of the dissy., the computer will immidiatly loose its referense pulse and cut the fuel.

My thought exactly. I too think he may be disconnecting the diss. itself. I have heard this before. Not a big deal..just a honest mistake.

thanks guys
I tried to adjust the valves to make sure it was not a loose lifter. And it is still real loud. It is real loud under the car and sometimes you hear a loud screaching sound that does not really get louder when you rev it but when you shut if off when it screaches it seems to get louder. Like it is grinding. I am almost positive it is spun bearing. And it is my mistake. I assumed it is a stock zz4 crank, but I have a feeling it has been turned and I put stock bearings in it. I will drop the pan tomorrow and measure the journals like I should have in the first place. Only hope there is not too much damage, I only have like 10 miles on it now with it like that. Thanks for the help guys.

almost forgot
Almost forgot about this one. The only thing i can't figure out, is the engine still has really good oil psi. It is like it was before, around 60psi. I'm stumped LOL

Check your FLYWHEEL! If it is crakced it will make alot of noise....This a much cheaper fix..And easier to check. I would check it first before tearing down the engine.

If it has good oil pressure, it's probably not a spun bearing.
I'd suspect the crank hitting the oil pan. Look closely at that before you get all excited about the crank, don't disturb it unless you absolutely have to.

Last time!!! Check the FLYWHEEL!! You know the thing that bolts to the back of the crank, the thing that the starter rides on to start the car. the big gear at the back of you engine. GM 305 and 350 had alot of trouble with these things cracking, causeing people to beleive their engine was shot. Check the flywheel. And a spun bearing won't cause you to lose oil pressure all together. In fact you could run a car for a good amount of time with a spun bearing. A bearing has nothing to do with your oil pump for the most part. Well maybe if it was the journa right by the pump, but.....
