is this a timing problem?

I have a 91 305 tpi. Recently my car has been having a weird problem. It idles fine, when you step on the gas in neutral or park it hesitates slightly then revs up and sometimes backfires. When driving, it crusies decent but when you step on the gas lightly it either bogs a little or like bogs and pops idk what it is but its weird. When you are into the gas a lot it has decent power but not as much as normal and it loses some power in 3rd. Is this timing or is my car just not getting enough fuel? I read somewhere if the tranny fluid is low it will lose power but i checked that the other day and i added some. Let me know what you think. Thanks

I have almost the exact same problem..... with the addition of the car Diseling on me after I shut it off. Someone said that my Ignition is to advanced and to retard it some. I don't know if thats the right thing to do, but I sure wouldn't doubt it. I just had the timing chain and gears replaced, as well as having pushrods replaced, and the Ignition Module... everything seems ok, but when I press on the gas to hard, or slam it... the car will bog, or almost stall... and when I start it up in the morning the car has to be reved up alot and kept going or it dies out... takes me like 10 mins to start my car :P And when I go driving around town the Choke light is on. I'm looking for some ideas the might help me out to. So if I find anything out I'll let you know, and hopefully someone will stop by and give us some good info

My only difference is that I have a 305 Carbed LG4...

sounds like your choke is bad, mine did the same thing til i rebuilt the carb, i got the lg4 carb on a 350...my choke like would be on all the time and it would bog a lot and it was a pain in the *** to start...when you turn the ignition on(not the car)do you hear a clicking noise coming from under the hood? after i did the carb it would make a clicking noise for like 30 seconds with just the ignition on and i thought something was wrong but turns out i guess its better now...now in the mornings i pump the gas once and it fires right up, i dont have to sit and warm my car up, i can just put in gear and leave...dont know if thats your problem but i was having the same problems and rebuilding the carb helped a lot...

Perhaps.... the carb does leak some gas.... hmmm

Well, I might take the carb outta my other LG4, maybe do a rebuild on it. Def will check it out though. Any idea weather the ignition timing would cause any of this though?

yeah it could be the timing. my car was bogging like that for a while. the timing was set too low, adjusted it back up and problem solved!

yeah, that could mess it up. not hard to tighten a bolt and hook up a light.
