Anyone make a cheap Rev limiter?

Outside of a 6AL and the likes, or ECM.. Does anyone make an aftermarket Rev limiter? Not interested in fuel cutoffs. Trying to do this low cost.

Sure, Your right foot.

Keep it under control And you won't have any problems.

And as im sure you are aware, the stock ECM has a fuel cutoff rev limit feature, but I don't reccommend it.

Your ECM should have a parameter for a rev limiter. The 165 ECM has it. I've never used it, but from what I understand, although not the most effective method (like the 6AL), it does work. I think it just cuts off fuel.

^ That's the reason he doesn't want a fuel cutoff. There's a difference between cutting off the fuel with the ECM and BUYING a fuel cutoff setup.

Yeah, GM does. They're called "valve springs" in the parts listing.

Aside from that, you'll either have to watch the tach, or change your definition os "cheap" to include aftermarket ignition foldback devices or fuel injector cutoffs.

I do not want to spend 6AL money, and I am looking for an "Ignition Foldback Device" as opposed to fuel cut offs. I was unsuccessful at looking at the tach previously , and was hoping there was an inexpensive way to go.

I was looking through my summit catalog and found a rev limiter like what the 6AL uses but it's the rev limiter. It says it can be used with OEM electronic ignitions and is aroung $100. would that work?

I live with summit catalogs on all floors of my home, but I must have missed that one. Thats what I am looking for! $100 is a bit high, but so was replacing my motor. Thanks for the info 89RS!

Yeah, I over-revved at the track a few years back. First time at the track, first run when staging.. I swear that track was as slick as ice!

You have TPI. You're not exactly going to be rocketing through the redline. It stops pulling way before the motor is in danger of any damage. Anyway, MSD and mallory make rpm activated switches. With a two pole relay and a little wiring you can have yourself a rev limiter......

I guess you could always pull the valve springs, beat them with a big freakin hammer and then put them back on the motor!

A rev limiter is not one of those things you can skimp on. I know a 6AL cost a around $175, but what type of bill would you get if you end up rev'ing it sky high?

It would not take much to hurt a motor when you break a u-joint or ring gear.

IMHO save your money until you can afford a real rev limiter.

My preference has always been to use the fuel cut-off rev limiter if you're looking to use it as a safety net for accidents. They won't damage anything if you hit them once in a while. Fuel cut-off on my wet-flow TBI system works great and trust me, dry-flow fuel-cut off is a lot better than mine (I have lean burns).
The only time you would really need a timing rev-limiter is if you're crazy about racing your car at the track and you've got a stick. An Auto isn't going to need a rev limiter unless you do the manual shifting and accidently think you're in drive when you're in overdrive, whoops, that was neutral, lol.
The timing rev-limiters are used for staging and or turbo spooling blah blah blah, I don't really know the specifics.
If I'm way out of line with this one please let me know because it's just from my experience and word of mouth from others.

It can happen with an auto. Like if the tranny doesnt shift. I've been down that road.

Im gonna go with the 6AL I like the idea of cutting off spark to individual cyclinders instead of fuel. Least this way you wont run lean at all. Rich for a second but id rather run rich instead of lean.

Also I plan on getting one of those nifty MSD shift lights to go with it.

LOL! I just wish that was the problem... still havent fixed it, that was 4 years ago. It doesnt like to shift 2-3 at WOT anymore. Just stays in second. Rev limiter I didnt need, but it could have been a problem. Damn cars.

I did that once in my *cough*Plymouth Sundance*Cough*...Punched it off the line, Red lined it before I relized it wasn't shifting, so I let off the gas, and it dropped into 2nd, and then 3rd. It was pretty cool, but I wouldn't want to do it again with a daily driver...
