hey guys.........
i know that this isnt the best place to post this, but there is no "general chat" forum.

anyway, my buddy has got some money burning a hole in his pocket and wants a car of his own (tired of being moms little baby anymore), so he wants a 68 camaro wtih a strait 6. i know nadda about this car. can anyone give me some idea of what they are like, power, etc etc
also, i guess its a 3spd auto-----how are they on the highway???

i would not get the car persoanlly. it will have most likely a 2-speed powerglide trans and 2.56 gear. the engines had probley about 150. and are **** slow probley 19's on a good day (seriously) there good for cruzin on the highway but other then that there dogs and have no performance aftermarket.

 

My father's 67 with a 454 was once a 2 speed powerglide with a straight six and 3.36 rear gears. he claims my 2.8 would destroy it. And that thing is a pig.

You're either looking at 140HP or 155HP depending on which 6 it is.

Unless, he has a bunch of money burning a whole in his pocket, where he could buy a better engine to put it, I'd say pass as well.

No aftermarket? Clifford intdustries, I believe, would disagree. You could get "split headers and have true dual exhaust. You could get a pretty good cam from Blue Racer/Wolverine. A 4bbl intake from Offenhauser...
True it will never be a 454. The question is, what do you want? I would modifly the 250.

I worked on a 68 camaro,installed a new cam and duel weber carbs,split exaust manifolds, it was not the fastest thing around but it wins a lot of car shows for being original. also did'nt sound too bad. the body was perfect. Also have done mods on a 53 chevy pickup...it is for sale at this time, it has the same mods as the camaro but it has a 235 I-6...here is a link to the ad

Everyone thinks the old pony cars were all muscle cars. Most of the Camaros and Mustangs only came with straight 6's or small V8's. If the car itself is in good shape then it's worth buying just as a good foundation for a buildup. Even dropping in a good 350/350 will make it better.

The proper designation for a straight 6 is L6 not I6. I have no idea why they used L.

 

how much jack does he have and how big is the fire in his pocket? i have a SBC 68ss i'd sell if the price was right, and in cash.

 

And another thing, that PowerGlide behind the 250 is probably an air cooled model. The beauty is that if the body is worth the price, the car was designed around a SBC engine, so other than front springs and a new drivetrain, all the shiznit is already there.

 

That's the kind of car everybody used to look for...

You could pick them up dirt cheap; like Stephen said, there were probably twice as many 6-cyl Mustangs and Camaros as there were V8 ones, let alone Z28s or SSs, and Mach 1s or GTs. Then a V8 was equally dirt cheap, just as it is now, so for pennies on the dollar you could clone a V8 car. Most of them got turned into 350/350 combos, lots of those that came with the old Saginaw 3-speeds still have the clutch pedal in them, or at least the stick brake pedal. Look around at a parking lot full of them at a car show or something, you'll see what I mean.

I believe that already by the mid-80s there were like 10 times as many 60s Z28 clones on the roads as actual Z28s. The ones that really used to tickle me were the 67 "RS/Z28" combos, since that didn't exist in 67; the 67 was a strictly race car, and no options beyond a heater were even available, especially such dead weight for racing features as disappeaaring headlights.

 

If it's reasonably priced and he passes let me know every one and his brother is looking for one. As an investment its golden.
