I need a new computer, can I get a junkyard one?

Hey guys,
My 3.1 keeps blowing ignition modules every 35 days, it isn't the pickup coil thats killing it, and it isn't the ignition coil thats killing it, it must be the computer, I hear thats the main cause. Now my problem is, I dont want to spend like 400 bux on a new computer, so can I get one out of a junked 3.1 bird/camaro? Let me know

You can get a used computer from the bneyard from a doner car if the computer is a match to yours. Autozone sells replacement ECM 's too. I think there about $80. I am not a fan of Autozone but if you cant get one you can always try them. Also, take the numbers off your ECM box when you go looking. Check other GM cars to. They used the same ECM boxes in a lot of different cars.

you have to keep your old chip too, so make sure you keep that.

Out of any 90-92 Fbody Will Work.

You Need to retain your stock Memcal.

Some other application used the 7730, but they escape me right now.

i recall looking in the tech data that it lists the different ecm's that were used in the thirdgens.

but does anyone have a chart that has cross-references over to other models as far as ecm's go?

What Did I just Post ?

012227730

Used in 90-92 MPFI Thirdgens. That inclues V6 MPFI and V8 Tuned Port.

There are other applications of the 012227730 On other platforms, S-truck for example, But I don't recall Off Hand.

Anything with a MPFI 2.8 or 3.1 In those approximate years would be a good candidate. Celibrity, Cavalier, ect.

Just look for that Part #.

thanks

i just wasn't sure with the engines being used in different applications, like the cavalier or celebrity, if they would use the same ecm or not.

so they use the same ecm i that application, then does the memcal contain information that is car specific? like is there a cavalier memcal and a camaro/firebird memcal?

or is there information on the diy prom board that would answer my questions?

yea good question. also, does where is my ecm located and how big is it? do any of you think this idea of my ecm causing my icm to die is a totally bogus idea, or that it could be killing it? my wiring is all stock as far as the engine goes, and the wires are all strong, so i guess there isn't a short somewhere. let me know

If you had a GM Service Manual, I'd tell you to do what they say- check out all of the ECM's inputs to make sure one of the circuits didn't fry the computer. Otherwise you could put a good computer in and have it get zapped the same way the old one did.

Are you using the correct heat-sink grease on the ignition modules? The grease should be applied to the metal plate on the ignition module; this is the plate that is on the "bottom" of the module, which contacts the metal "top" of the distributor base. Is your engine running abnormally hot (dashboard gauge broken) to cook these things?

NO, its like freezing temps around here and I only commute 1-2 miles max so it cant get that hot, and I do use the grease.

To get a list of cars that used that computer, you should be able to go to ACDelco's website, find the part number by going to the automotive parts section and entering in your car. Go to the electrical section and pick module, engine control. It should come up with the 122730 computer with part number 16198262. Then take that number and go back to the automotive list up at the top on the home page and select Vehicle List by Part Number. Put in the number and it'll give you a list of cars that used it and their engine codes.
