THe TPI to Carb Swap

Well, I posted about a week ago, talking about my car shutting off, let me tell you whats up now.

we started breaking down the tpi. I didnt realie the b***ch it was to get the manifold off. we broke the whole tpi down and off. we found all the injectors were nearly fouled out it looks like the needed replacing a few thousand miles ago..probably 25 to 30. the intake i had didnt fit because it was PRe-86 and the 305 bolt pattern changed in 86 so i had to order one from JEGs which was a total of 180 bucks...but i guess its a small price to pay for what im doing.

Dude, you could of just drilled the manifold's center holes oblong to fit it. But hey now you have an aftermarket one so you can call it a mod.

Well, i could have but i didnt. But the truth is do it once right with the right parts alleviates problems later.

When I converted to carb I did the same thing (bought a 87-up manifold) it fit worse than a pre 86 style one. I had to grind off a crap-load of aluminum from the back of the intake because it would hit the oil pressure sending unit on the block ...It still didnt seem to sit just right so I sold it and bought a regular Performer RPM and modified the 4 center bolt holes with a deburr and hand drill. No leaks, no nothing.

if you have any questions about converting shoot me and e-mail or PM and I'll help you out ...I went through it all twice and ran into every possible problem along the way (my car is cursed, ya know)

Why convert from a Fuel Inj. setup to Carb (unless its tbi, lol) I mean think about it, your gonna have fun with jetting let me tell ya not to mention the more fuel your going to burn, if that's a concern

Your right, Dan, but he can burn extra fuel and make more power at the same time. And what it cost him to convert will be a fraction of what it would cost to mod a TPI, or TBI to make the same power. That is why I ditched mine. Now honestly, if I had the money, I would have kept FI, but not a TPI for obvious reasons.

I'd much rather replace some mechanical parts on a carb than burn PROMs and pay massive amounts of money on crap for fuel injection. I also got BETTER gas milage when I first converted to carb (when the motor was stock)

See now a turbo, I would think, would be easier to get tuned with FI. You can run a lot more hp through a FI/Turbo, than a carb/turbo due to the tuning that is available. But it will still cost more, and I don't have money trees growing.

Well its like this yall

I had to do something my computer was shot, the injectors are shot 6/8 and shi* i dont know how to work on a TPI unit and i was tired of messing with it. so we opted for the carb, my gas mileage was going to crap and im sorry i think 88 is a cursed year. but now i think we will be ok..i ordered the Intake from jegs 87 + non egr...so im hoping i wont encounter alot of problems..(hope) lol
