Freakin oil filter

I started changing my oil today . The filter was put on so tight by the mechanic that I have torn it up trying to get it off . Only a small portion of the metal is on at the end where it screws in .and its stubble metal .I first tried putting a screw driver in it to get it off , and that just destroyed and tore and ripped the filter off ..HELPPPP !!!!!!

Wayne,

Presuming this is a Chevy V engine, try getting a sharp chisel on the remaining base of the oil filter and chase it around (counter-clockwise, of course) until it is loosened. I've had some real S.O.B. filters, too.

I'd follow the above advice, except I'd use a brass drift punch instead of a chisel..if the brass punch started to fray, then I'd switch to a regular punch...then chisel as last resort.

Thanx guys !
Yeah , I usually do my oil change but , it was in the shop and they said it needed changing , long story guys . But , I'll be damn if they changed it again . I think they must have put a torque wrench on it and tightened it down as mush as they could .

Hey Wayne,
You might be able to remove the filter boss...and work it out on a bench with a bit more room to spare.

8Mike9 ,
Thanx man . Yeah , it is pretty tight under there . I finally got it off though . I had to put a screwdriver in one of the flange holes and tap it out of there with a hammer .Then I got to have more fun with the oil plug on the pan that must have been torqued on there to 250 pds ..

Check the threads on the oil pan, the plug, and the filter base.
Make sure none of them are stripped, stretched, or damaged.

Real pain in the butt when you pull an oil plug out of a pan that's been damaged by overtightening, and the oil pan threads come with it...
