what the **** (insert four letter word)

This is what happens....
Whenever I drive down the road up to about 2500-300 RPM, the car starts to intermittedly cut out, kind of like a brake keeps catchingm that kind of feeling. The car is manual and over 200,000, with new front brakes/bearings. Its gotta be coming from the back somewhere, could it be the back bearings? driveshaft?

Highly doubtful... nothing back there knows or cares what the engine RPM is.

I'd check the ignition, and the fuel pressure as it is screwing up. In fact, if you haven't changed you fuel filter lately, you need one anyway; just replace it and see if it helps.

thanks man-

I should have thought about that but.....The engine/carb/fuel pump does happen to be brand new...it has been sitting outside in the cold iowa weather but I will check just to be sure and then ignition, could it be the coil?

I think just about everyone here will speak from experience and say, just because it's new, doesn't mean it's working right. I'd check for fuel delivery issues as well. Are the secondaries opening? Work the throttle linkage at the carb and check it out. Choke not working properly? Fuel filter clogged? Air filter clogged?

important piece....

I just checked everything, made sure the filter was good, all the wires were on, and took it for a drive. There is one important thing that I forgot....this cut-out only occurs when the car is IN GEAR. When I am in neutral and rev it, it does fine. It is only when the car is in gear and seems more noticable at higher speeds. ??? This was supposed to be my winter car

Im thinkin fuel pump. Car starts to idle low, seems like its gonna die, then you accelerate a lot and it catches some power, then the cycle repeats. Hesistation, low idle and shaky nature. *** I hated it. Check into it.

Usual was done. Drop exhaust, unbolt gas tank to change the fuel pump. Hard to do yourself I heard. I payed 300$ somethin. Anyway. See whats up.

I have a similar issue... doesn't idle like it's going to die but the idle is kinda inconsistent... I'll hear it go up and down a little bit... and when I'm putting the pedal down it'll act like it doesn't want to pull at all... and the sound of the engine changes until I let off the accelerator a little... even flooring it at 80mph on the highway it'll do this and it doesn't want to pull at ALL... I know that TPI chokes your engine after a certain RPM but this is getting ridiculous.

Well, seriously, this sounds liek a case of an engine miss, which when you have a carb, more or less points at the ignition.

Have you changed your plugs lately? how are the wires? ignition module? stock ones garbage after 4500... cap and rotor new?

All those thing happen to be rarely changed.

Check it out, pull the cap off and see how crusted up it is- is the car hard to start?

If it does turn out to be a fuel problem, sounds like you have jets that are too small for the colder weather, or some water in the fuel, improper float level (higher rpms drain the bowls, car acts like its running out of fuel)

Alrighty then....

Hey...Thanks for all the replies. I am going to check into it when I need the car again after christmas, I have an SS Monte Carlo that needs to be driven. The car is carbed and will check the ignition first because the motor is new with a stock distributor/cap/rotor. Plugs/Wires are new also. The fuel pump is was a new stock replacement but will change also. Hey...again, thanks for all the help-
LAter guys,
Ben

I was thinking....

yeah, and I agree that there is a very good chance the fuel pump I bought last year went bad. This makes sense since bogging only happens when a load is put pn the motor. That may be an early warning sign of future problems. Thanks, I was just worried that since my two front bearings went out a month apart from each other, the back was worn out also- I have one of those edelbrock chrome looking race fuel pumps I will replace it with-
