Can I keep this under the stock hood?
An Edelbrock Performer RPM Intake Manifold and a Holley 4 bbl on top of that? What kind of air cleaner assembly would I have to use or isn't it possible at all?

eh a really small one.. when i finished puttin my engine togather n put it in i was kinda pissed cause i thought i'd have enough clearance with my proformer rpm and 650 dp... i was wrong.. hood wouldnt shut
... plus to clear my vaccum tree i needed a one inch spacer... without it and the carb sitting on top the hood would close... but the back would be sticking up because it was resting on the top of the carb... if u dont care about a banged up air cleaner n a dent in the middle of the hood tho u can probably pull it off.. u'll just havta bang the hood up a little and use a recessed air cleaner... i couldnt do that cause a recessed cleaner wont clear the fuel line on my dp.. its a real tight fit but you might be able to pull it off.. if you do you wont really have any hood clearance though and the stock hood will more then likely be sitting on the back of your air cleaner.. but if you can get a recessed cleaner and run like a half or an inch thick air filter so the top is pretty much snug against the top of the carb it should work.. i just said **** it and put a 4 inch cowl hood on it.. with a one inch spacer i can run a normal sized air filter of about 3 inches high by 14 with a recessed base air cleaner raised half an inch to clear my fuel line.. i have about 1/4th to a quarter inch of hood clearance still.

Hmm, a cowl hood isn't really on the budget, plus a nitrous plate would eventually end up between the carb and manifold. What would be the best intake manifold I could purchase that would still fit under the hood?
i have an edelbrock performer intake manifold with the rochester q-jet and an edelbrock air cleaner and it just barely and i mean barely clears. the hood actaully just contacts the edge of the aircleaner as the hood latches

A performer rpm intake does in fact fit under the hood of a third gen ... If you use the right GM drop base aircleaner assembly.
Here is a link to a past thread with proper info and pics.
A thin nitrous plate will fit too.

My Performer RPM AIR GAP (.2" taller than reg. RPM) and Demon 750DP fit under my stock IROC hood with a 1.5 inch drop base filter housing with a 3 inch filter. I had to remove the hood insulation, and there is a tiny ding in the top filter cover where the bolt for the louvers hits it, but thats no biggie.
I imagine the difference is gonna come with how worn your motor mounts are. I've got 170K mile mounts on mine

It is going to be a 600 CFM Vacuum Secondary carb I'm pretty sure. The only thing that would change would be I might use a 650 CFM, but I doubt it. What about the 14 x 3" drop base K&N?
I think I might just keep the stock intake manifold and spend the money I would've spent on the RPM on a set of heads. I could just use an adaptor plate to mount the holley on the stock manifold, but what if I wanted to add nitrous? That won't work with the adaptor will it?

I have the performer rpm and the edelbrock 750 carb, and my hood hits when it closed, but it does close. I have the daul snorkel assembly.

If you do not have a cowl induction hood, an open element filter takes in alot of hot air. And then if you drop it down even closer to the heat, it is even worse. Just what I have heard, havn't tried it myself because I like the daul snorkel setup.
Ok, the cam I'm putting in makes power up to 5200 rpm. So maybe I'll just go with the Edelbrock Performer intake manifold instead of the rpm. That way I'll gain some extra clearance I'll need for my NOS plate.

from the 60's.
Read my post and get the right aircleaner base.
You can still buy them new from car restoration sources and they are common at swap meets.
This is the only system that fits right and doesn't restrict the airflow. GM did the thinking for ya 30 yrs ago. with the Corvette.
If you want RamAir check out this company.
Email them to get the right one for your car.

This is the only other company that I know of that makes a aircleaner base that will sit as low and flow as good as the GM L-88 air cleaner.

If your looking at the regular Performer, consider the EPS mainfold instead, its supposed to be good for about 5 more hp. Its about the same price and appears to be about the same height as well.
For what its worth, my old combo consisted of a cam making all its power by 5200 rpm, and a performer manifold, and it seemed to work very well...

well....
i have used two different open element air cleaners on my 305.
i'm running a gm aluminum intake (whatever came off of an 87 monte carlo ss) with an adapter for the holley carb that i'm running.
the first one was something from a buddie's 74 vette. was too tall.
i bought a 14x3 summit chrome special for $17.95, and it fits under the hood, even with the carb and spacer.
my guess is the same as eric's.... i have no clue how many miles are on my motor mounts.

if your only making power til 5200 a regular proformer intake would be a better choice anyway..
