Last three digits for good 305 heads are 081, 416 and 601.

the only 624 heads i found were

75-86...350/400......76cc chamber, 1.72/1.5, 1.94/1.5 or 2.02/1.6 valves

on a 305, compression will be really low, and i wouldnt use those, if that is the head, on a 305 your better off finding a stock 305 head, for compression sake.

I'd say the best 305 heads would be the 416's.
I believe that the 601's are very similar.

You can usually pick up a set of 416's on eBay for around a $100US.

Yes, they are 416s. Go to almost any wrecker and get a set for $25.

The best 305 head probabily is the Vortec 305 head.
The casting # ends in 059 and or 520.

This head is simular to the L-31 350 Vortec head.

The differences are the combustion chamber is 58cc's and shaped like the L-98 cast iron head #083.
The valves are 1.84x 1.50.

The ports are the same raised "straight port" design as the L-31
350 vortec head.

They are found on '96+up 305/5.0L Vortec truck motors.

These L-30 305 Vortec heads are not sought after in the wreckers so one should be able to scoop them up for a song.

With larger valves and some porting you'll have a beauti Vortec head for low$$$.

They require a vortec style intake.
Performance Products just released two more new Vortec manifolds. One is a RPM airgap clone "Crosswind"
the other is a single plane Vortec race intake (dart clone)
" Hurricane".
These manifolds are high quality and priced under the competition.

I know this maybe a stupid question.Where is the casting #'s on the head at.I am building a 350.I have a set of vortec heads off of my mom's 96 tahoe.I also have a set of 327 heads,350 heads, and 307 heads off of my 69 camaro.

I just want to know which of these heads would be the best.I am pretty sure the vortecs would be.Just not sure if I want to spend the extra money on the intake or not. Also my dad pulled all the valves out of one of the vortec heads. And no telling where the keepers are.Does anyone know where I can get some new one's.I guess if I called summit they would have them.Or can I use some off these other sets of heads.

You can find the casting numbers by looking between the valve springs on a small block head.

List the casting numbers that you have available to you and someone will tell you what they are and what performance potential they each have or don;t have, and what to do to them.

Isn;t your mom going to get upset if ya scoop the heads off her Tahoe?:sillylol:

You can buy valve keepers etc localy through any auto parts supply like NAPA, pep boys a automotive machine shop or even a GM parts Dealer. Look in your local Yellow pages.
