Removing Non functioning Power Steering pump
Removing Non functioning Power Steering pump
My power steering pump leaks all the fluid you put into it. Over the coarse of about a day. This got old to me so I just stopped putting fluid in and drive without power steering. I dont mind. So I was thinking last night that since its still hooked up its probably robbing me of horepower to still turn the pump. I was going to just take it off or at least just take the belt off. but my brother was telling me that fluid will still get pushed out of the steering gear and if theyre not capped off really well it will cause it to squirt out and in turn damage my rack and pinion. Is that true?I didnt think you still needed fluid in the steering box. But I may be wrong.
So should I just disconnect the belt or leave it the way it is till I can afford a new power steering pump. I dont mind going without power steering. Opinions?

First you don't have a rack. The simplest thing would be to try to fix the leak--might must be a hose or something--and hope the pump keeps working. If you want to have manual steering, you need to get a manual steering box--I hear the manual steer S10 box will work. Most any automotive steering box needs some type of lubrication. My advice is to keeping adding to it, or stop driving it until you can get it fixed.

I am interested in the s10 box. what year models work?
Also how bad is the steering after the swap? could a person just fill the box up with fluid and cap it off. Then take the pump off?
Is it even possible to maybe use gear oil and then cap it off?
just some ideas I had. Anyone ever done this?

I 've tried to drive without the pump working as well as a brake booster not working and it's dangerous. The drag on the wheel is just too stiff to safely manuver quickly on the road. Stick with the S-10 idea. Have you ever had someone tow you on the road? Two hands to heave the wheel and two feet to get a little brake.

$55.99 from Autozone, with the reservoir. That's for my car, I don't know what kind of car you have. For cryin' out loud, man, just fix the steering. You're going to go through an awful lot of trouble just to make your car harder to drive. You're going to have to spend some money anyway so just bite the bullet and fix the car. If you're that worried about saving money just try and find a used pump.
