Funky Gas Guage

Hello everyone.

I just recently got my 88 camaro back from my father. 3 years ago he parked in his backyard and said he'd rebuild the engine. Well, I've had it for 3 weeks now.

Here's my current problem.

The gas guage behaves strangely.

When it is full, the guage points straight up.

When the tank approaches 1/2 full (or is it 1/2 empty?) the needle begins to bounce from 1/2 full to straight up.

Eventually, the needle settles down when the tank is about 1/2 full and reports accurately from then on. I've watched the miles it uses per tankful and I've run it to near empty. Filling it up from empty takes about 13 to 14 gallons depending on how brave I was.

Since this car has sat 3 years, I'm hoping that running good gas thru it will clear up my guage problems.

Thoughts? Ideas?

Thanks

It happens to every camaro. it is either the sending unit on the gas tank or one of the wires on the gauge came lose. I have never tried to fix this problem i just live with it. When the needle starts to move than it is time to get gas. somone else can probably info on trying to get it fixed.

ya mine will still show an empty tank even after I fill it up. the needle will show full only after I take off and make a turn. then it works normal (well, normal for our cars). I just put in a 4th gen dash and filled the tank and the new gauge does the same thing so its definitly a problem in the tank area
