601 head pricing

Hello 3rd genners....

My duaghter went out and bought a set of 601 heads locally for her 1983 camaro z/28.

They were rebuilt about 2 years ago, and only have 2000 miles on them...or so she was told.

$250.00/pr.

New valve and guides

Did she get "hosed" Didn't sound that bad to me, but i see posts on the board of $100 pair heads.

I just don't want to see her get taken.

Any help appreciated.

One last thing...can the stock LG4 intake still be used? Or do we need to replace that as well if we use the 601's.

Jim

No, I think that is fair for a pair of rebuilt heads. But port, polish, bowl-blend and gasket match them before intalling them. You'll gain a nice 20 hp or so

Follow the instructions at the end of my sig. The stock intake will work fine. I use 601 heads, too.

Jim,

If they will replace the intake valves with 1.94" valves that will get another 10 hp or so on the top end rpms. Just a thought

SB...Thanks for the info. Addtional power is NOT required. This is for my 18 YO daughters 83 z. These heads die off at 4500 or so...good. As noted earlier, we will call it a rev limiter.

I thought the $250 sounded high. Just wanted a decent set of "done" heads. I didn't feel like porting and new valves, and all that. Just bolt it back on and go...No tire burning, but it is a 5-speed....snappy enough.

thanks again.

Any comment on the intake compatibility?

Thanks

Jim

Welcome on!!

Intake manifold will bolt up with no problem.

601 are I believe the heads that came on the early LG4's?

but good deal on the the $100 for heads is most likely ones that need a rebuild.

Everone has different opinon on the 601...I saw the 601 heads as being for the HO? Not the LG4...I have seen info both ways. I am not SURE anyone is SURE...?

Maybe I am STILL wrong...Just not sure..

Anyway, they WILL bolt up and hopefully she will get YEARS of life out of them, and not turn into a speed demon like her OLD MAN.

Thanks for all the help.

Jim

It's hard to keep them down on the farm once they've seen those big city lights

Yes, they used 601 and 416 heads on LG4s and L69s up to 1986. There really is no "HO" head for the 305--they are all the same.

In 1987 they switched to 081 centre bolt heads for 305s.

They also used the 601s on the 262 V8.
